This stupid crap is partially why we have the trans nightmare to deal with. Parents freaking out over boys playing with kitchen sets and girls playing with action figures. It's seriously so stupid that it makes my head ache and throb. I played knights with swords and also had an easy bake oven. I'm a woman, regardless. And since when the fuck did Legos become a 'boys toy' in the first place? Sometimes, I think people make up new gender roles on the spot. I once saw a woman rip a Tweety Bird stuffy out of a boys hand and tell him it was for girls. Like, that's not even a societal stereotype. People are dumb as fuck.https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/what-to-do-if-child-asks-for-toy-not-typically-for-their-gender-explainer-171800552.html

@Morbidemoness I didn't realise gender stereotypes were still so strong untill I had my daughter. I went with her to a shop to get bubble liquid and there was only cars bottles or frozen bottles. my daughter didn't know any of them (she was 3 ) she chose the cars one because it was red and it was her favorite color at that time. the man in the shop insisted she CAN'T have it because it's for boys.

@steph my little brother always loved Dora the Explorer, but he got ripped to shreds by the other kids for wearing the backpack and came home sobbing when was about 5 or 6. He refused to ever take it to school again. I imagine if he were in the same position today (he's 18 currently), the school would've given him "she/her" pronouns and helped him get access to puberty blockers.

@Morbidemoness it's so sad that kids are so conformist.my daughter was also made fun of at the same age for wearing "boys shoes "🙄 now she is almost 9 and sometimes she is wearing boys clothes (I never told her they are boys clothes, because obvioulsy they are not, they are just sold on the boys aisle) and they are not making fun of her for that. I don't think the transkids bullshit is in french schools yet. at least not on primary schools that's for sure. even if there is quite a lot of propaganda on TV.

@steph That's good to hear! and that's great that she wears what she feels comfortable in!My brother just graduated highschool this summer, and he could barely cope with the last few years. Nearly everyone in the art school he went to was trans or genderqueer or whatever else, and he would come home and say how confusing it was, and how he couldn't remember how many genders there were supposed to be. One of his best friends, a gay boy with homophobic parents, became a 'trans woman' and is dating other 'trans women' online which terrifies me; I don't see that ending well for him.I always tried to tell my brother that he didn't have to use others preferred pronouns (I'm talking zi/zir and tree/treeself, not just he/him and she/her), but he was too afraid of retribution from the administration. luckily, he never got swept into it.

@steph @Morbidemoness I think it is worse for boys. For girls, a lot of the stuff in the boys' section can be seen as unisex, but so much of girls' clothing is covered in pink and sparkles that if a boy wears it, it would really stand out. The last time I was teaching elementary school, it really struck me how much more comfortable the boys' clothing looked. Girls' clothing was always tighter, shorter, more low-cut, had shorter sleeves, and had all kinds of frills added. The boys' clothing just looked like it was made to be played in.

@Morbidemoness This is why feminists in the 1970's spoke about the harms of "gender". We were and are gender abolitionists. This new emphasis and worship of "gender" is partially, since "gender" is a patriarchal tactic to oppress women, a backlash to feminists. The "Gender" religion.

@Fullycaffeinated Years back, I wrote some feedback to a sewing magazine. One of my two main points was to request they include more functional details in the outdoor clothing patterns meant for women, like they do with men’s patterns. I also mentioned that looser cuts would be welcome for many women. I got a mealy-mouthed response, which in no way addressed my points. My distinct impression was that they didn’t see what the problem was. @steph @Morbidemoness

@Gnomeshatecheese @Fullycaffeinated @Morbidemoness @steph well of course not, women only like fashionable things, not sturdy or useful things.I wore boys shoes for a period in primary. We were short of money. My shoes were bought at the co-op shoe shop with stamps saved from co-op grocers in the same row. The boy's school shoes were brogues with good solid leather. I can't remember what the girls ones were like, but mum thought they would let in water and not last very long and since I walked to school I was happy with this.I got flack from classmates - those are boys shoes. I didn't care, I just asked if their feet were dry because mine were. They were worn with knee socks and a school skirt. Until the chill of winter and then it was thick tights. and when I was a bit older, we decided I should wear trousers in winter.

@HebrideanHecate @Morbidemoness @steph Exactly! The clothing is so much more gendered now than it was when we were kids. We were almost always in clothing that was meant to be used, not just seen. I always feel bad for the girls in the playground who know that what they are wearing will not hold up to play the way the boys' clothing will.

@Morbidemoness @steph and personally I think this policing and punishing of boys for liking anything associated with the female (stereotypical feminine clothes, makeup, behaviours) is the reason why we have AGP. The taboo creates the crossdressing fetish. Until now the fetish was shameful and mostly kept hidden. Until drag and trans, and now we all have to allow them to practise their fetish in front of us under the trans cosh of 'including them and validating their true identity' and the drag cosh of 'family entertainment!'

@Fullycaffeinated @Mildred @Morbidemoness @Spring @steph Actually, I used to crave a nice dress, and I was always outside, but still had an urge for the odd piece of pretty. I had one cottonsummer dress once which was a little bit fancier than usual, cream cotton with tiny bunches of apricot roses on it, and shortsleeves, shirred front, I loved that thing! And when a bluewith white polka dots arrived in a parcel of cousin cast offs, itwas a bit too tight for me though. I must have been about 5, butI insisted on being stuffed into it, like a sausage, until I realisedthat yes, it really really was much too tight to be comfortable, and watched with envy as it was sent to a smaller cousin.

@Fullycaffeinated @steph It's a disturbing lens that shows just how early girls are sexualized. Even elementary school girls need tight, low-cut, and short to show that women are objects for the male gaze. It sounds like crazy rad fem stuff until you realize that little boys are not encouraged to dress in hot pants and nipple tassels. Only little girls are made to look this way. Why a six year old needs boob-shaped cups on the front of her dress is a question only a pervert can answer. And anything associated with girls is inferior therefore a boy can't wear or desire these items until he comes of age and then it's only acceptable if he calls himself a woman and fetishes it because, of course, male sexual satisfaction comes first and foremost.

But I think that was the time of mass produced, cheap clothing and products becoming more available. In particular I remember all the hideous Spice Girls merchandise.

@Fullycaffeinated @HebrideanHecate @Mildred @steph It's so beyond disturbing that sexy schoolgirl is even a thing. That uniform, by default, is being worn by girls 18 and under, and this is a major fetish? Poor Britney was only like 16 when the song came out, 17 in the Oops I Did It Again video. It's gross AF

@FeartnTired In all fairness, their women’s outdoor patterns weren’t bad, they just weren’t quite as practical in certain ways than those of men. If it were just ordinary, everyday wear I wouldn’t really care that much. But it annoyed me that fashion trumped function so clearly in outdoor clothing, which is fundamentally meant to be functional. @Fullycaffeinated @Morbidemoness @steph

@HebrideanHecate @steph @Morbidemoness This is a random sample of “girl” and “boy” shoes at one of the biggest retailers for school shoes in the UK. Little girls are immune to wet feet apparently.

@Spring @Morbidemoness @steph but why don't women then masturbate to having short hair, wearing loose pants and playing with toy trucks in fake moustache to the same amount as men do, if ever? It's not about childhood taboos at all

@sleepwalker @Morbidemoness @steph From what I've read, women don't form fetishes at all in the same number and scale that men do. Crossdressing is a very common fetish among men, and I do think that's because men see feminine apparatus everywhere around them in life. the taboo morphs into a fetish around the age of adolescence when male pubery kicks in.

@PennyLope @Fullycaffeinated @HebrideanHecate @Mildred @Morbidemoness @Spring @steph My go-to outfit in 1995 (when I was ten) was a Universal Studios baseball cap, black and white striped Bermuda shorts and an "I just can't wait to be king!" Lion King t-shirt. I also remember an abomination of a bright yellow with blue stripes Adidas tracksuit. Then came Kappa!

@FeartnTired @Fullycaffeinated @HebrideanHecate @Mildred @Morbidemoness @Spring @steph Ha! That should have read tween for Shellsuits, I was only about 10 and I think my mum got a notion. I still remember everyone wearing them though, young, old, men, women and kids. They were truly hideous, in a guady for everyone kind of way.
