> "If you want me to make you useful software, pay me. If you use software made by others in their spare time and find it useful, pay them. This should not be a controversial opinion. This should not be a new thing. This should already be the state of the world and it is amazingly horrible for us to have the people that make the things that make our software work at all starve and beg for donations."https://christine.website/blog/open-source-broken-2021-12-11

@amolith Very well worded, and I still think companies that rely in FOSS software and libraries should give back always, specially if they're winning a lot of money.

@amolith Good read and true of the vast majority of projects. I've lost count on how many projects, who post public financials, make less than $10000/year from donations. I made more than $10000 CAD a year when I flipped burgers back when I was 16. If i use a piece of software every day then I try to donate $60/year CAD and I consider that to be on the cheapskate side.

@amolith I would love to financially support FOSS more. Sadly, I live pretty paycheque to paycheque right now. That said, a bunch of the software I use is stuff I've written myself and released under copyleft licenses. That's the way I'm giving back to the community for the time being.

@jlamothe I think it's more about for-profit companies not giving back to the software that makes their profit possible. Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with an individual using a library I spent a lot of time on to build their todo app for fun and not contributing back at all. I think it's when big players come in and make big money using big software created and maintained by a small person without funding that small person's development efforts that there's an issue.

@PublicNuisance I think $60/yr is reasonable if you're an individual. Imo the bigger problem is more when large, for-profit companies swoop in to use software created and maintained by a very small team or individual without funding their efforts in any way.

@amolith On the other hand, you can release your code under a license like GPL. I don't mind if big players come and make big money using my code as long as they release the whole thing under GPL.@jlamothe

@amolithI would personally love to donate to open source projects. Unfortunately, the only way I can is through my parents, and I doubt they will help me do so.Anyways, #ossthanks

@captainepoch @amolith except they do. Most big open source projects as effectively run by companies of varying sizes.

@newt @amolith I can think now of Koin (https://insert-koin.io/). It's run by a community, not a company, and its founding is done by sponsoring the project. And this is a widely used project in Android development. I'm sure the people behind it didn't get any money until not so long ago...

@captainepoch @amolith ok, run isn't the right term. Developed would be better. Check out contributors list. I bet many of those people use koin for their work projects and not just for fun.

@newt @amolith Maybe some of them do, maybe some of them contributed to the project because they found something at work that could be improved not just for them but for everybody. What I mean is that not every single Open Source project used by companies is developed by companies and put openly on the Internet. Some of them start as a personal project and, for any reason, become widely used by companies that, even saving a ton of money with it, don't give anything back (not even submit patches/PRs to the project if something isn't working and they can patch it).

@captainepoch @amolith of course. But at the same time, the biggest and the most essential projects are mostly contributed to by larger entities who employ people to work on them. Operating systems, compilers, browsers (yes, I know), et cetera. If a company should pay or in other way reimburse for using an open source project, would it be only fair that you personally should pay for every piece of software you use? Meh...But with that said, I'm not even sure what the argument here is :comfyjoy:

@amolith I'd be interested in the other maintainers regarding this aspect. As far as I can see, besides Ralph Goers there are two to three other main-contributors to log4j

@amolith I really should use the AGPL for my projects more and offer a paid alternative for companies that don't want to be bound to the terms of this license.@JuleLe

@amolithI truly believe that every project mentioned in https://directory.trade-free.org deserves financial support, at least enough money to keep their projects alive. These people are literally doing good for the world without asking anything in return !
