This is a pretty cool idea for a platformhttps://convey.earthIt's meant to be reminiscent of lobste.rs and hacker news but with a financial incentive to post legitimately useful content. You buy coins and each byte you post costs one coin. At the moment, 500,000 coins costs $1 USD so that's a rate of $0.000002 USD per byte of text.Note that these are not cryptocurrency coins, though. They're just an arbitrary unit that represents the real money you spent on them.Posts have a straight-forward fee, the one mentioned above. However, when someone replies to a post, half of the coins they spent go directly to the parent post, the one they're replying to. Half of what remains goes to their grandparent and half of what remains after that goes to their great-grandparent.This model also has the benefit of discouraging trolls; poor content won't get any replies so they just end up losing money. Additionally, a digest of the best posts — the ones with the most interaction — is created and sent to subscribers at the end of the month. Poor-quality content created by trolls wouldn't show up there either.Further still, authors that make it into the monthly digest receive a reward proportional to their content's yield :akko_fingerguns: And above all, it's open source and written in #Go :blobfoxaww:https://github.com/AletheiaWareLLC/conveyearthgo

@amolith hmm i think theres room for this to work in some niche cases, but i feel like it encourages posts asking for help, posts with incorrect information (prompting other users to correct it), and controversial opinions. id be curious to see how this develops going forward

@amolith I'm not sure _how_ I feel about this, but it _is_ very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

@amolith Interesting. Thanks for sharing. I like the idea of their monthly editions, a rolling "best of" snapshot. It reminds me of kuro5hin in some ways.

@amolith That's really cool. But what if I'm poor, then I can't voice my opinion as much... And if I'm rich, then I've got a license to shitpost. :ageblobcat:

@amolith the idea is interesting, but provabky needs further tuning. Original posts that would create rage (and angry replies) would probably be lucrative in the current model. In a similar way that algorithmically filtered social media selects for "engagement".

@samgai potentially, but not if people recognise it as trolling and just ignore them

@amolith @samgai I agree, I think people wouldn't want to give "coins" to trolls and it actually discourage replying to trolls.I'm more concerned that people who have a lot of great insight can be limited in their responses.I'm not very keen on the idea of platforms with where money is the central part of the algorithm, not until we are equal in wealth and payment is neutral infrastructure anyway, but I think it is an interesting idea for an algorithm that attempts to promote good content.
