@xjix Ivan Illich wrote a lenghty book and made speeches on this, comparing how cars couldn't even hold a candle to plain ol' walking (considering how much time the average person must work to pay and maintain a car ; making the whole "speed" in cars an illusion).Meanwhile there are modern velomobile that can go for the average user to 35km/h on flat roads. I wonder if I'll see they day when I'll consider buying one without looking like a fool. https://www.lowtechmagazine.com/2010/09/the-velomobile-high-tech-bike-or-low-tech-car.html

@wizzwizz4 @xjix sure they can! multiple options.https://www.freedomconcepts.com/product-lines/adaptive-bikes/ (including some handbikes)https://www.mobilityaccess.com/duetand others in similar styles. American roads are shit for them, but American roads are shit for everyone regardless with little meaningful change in sight in most areas.

@klardotsh @xjix Hm, true. There are other mobility issues that render self-powered vehicles difficult for some people, but this would work for most. And electric vehicles are getting better.

@xjix @Hyolobrika Plus an e-bike with no battery can still be a functional bike. A car with no engine is just a metal box on wheels.Although that box could come in handy in extreme weather. Hmm. Is there something like a snow-velomobile?

@xjix@mk.toast.cafe but more seriously there are some situations where large vehicles are more suitable. For example, there's no way I'm going to ride a bike 3 hours to a gig with my double bass and amp on my back or ride a bike an hour down the mountain pulling a truckload of wood behind me to keep my house warm for the next couple weeks :shibalaugh:

@clacke @xjix if you live in a city that might work, but in the countryside, where you need to get a car-trunk-ful of groceries from a shop 10km away every week, I don't think that's an option

@wolf480pl @xjix Correct. So that's something that needs to be taken into consideration when making the lifestyle choice of living in the countryside. Perhaps it's the only serious choice available for whatever reason. But we need to be honest: All else being equal it is a choice that has negative repercussions on the environment.
