If you want to #selfhost but don't have the skills, you should really try #yunohost IMHO it's the best way to free yourself from #gafamBasically it's a headless server, once installed, includes a preconfigured xmpp chat server plus an email server. In addition, it allows for one click installs of many excellent applications like #nextcloud #mastodon #wordpress #bitwarden #peertube and many more. Give it a spin with this handy demo instance https://demo.yunohost.org/yunohost/sso/Please boost!

@lps I'm a sysadmin and I still use YUNoHost for me and my friends (even previous job), because it saves so much time and effort managing many little instances with a single login.

@lps Damn, I should have read this 3 days ago. Now I'm in the middle of the installation by hand in the terminal. Only #postfix & Co. left, then it should hopefully work. If not, I will try it after a reset with #yunohost. Thanks for the tip 👍

@UmWerker @lps It's still a good training to do it manually. You'll appreciate much more the abbreviation with automatized installations like yuno or /e/cloud.In the end if there is a issue on your server with your yuno installation it will be your problem and you need some skills to fix it or even to receive help from the yuno community.

@caliandroid @lps True. But isn't it the intention and goal of #yunohost to make these installations more comfortable? Especially to counteract any centralization with simplified setup of an own server? If not, the project would be superfluous. Let's see where I end up 😉

@UmWerker @lps you're right but hosting yuno on a personal public server means more than just installing yuno. Yuno won't keep the Linux system up-to-date, does not control IPTables firewall, does not deliver system wide backup. In the end to use yuno, you still need the webserver admin skills and yuno is just one of many bricks to control.

@UmWerker @lps if you know how to set up and securize your host system, you will already be skilled enough to orchestrate the apps Yuno automatize

@UmWerker @lps https://yunohost.org/en/selfhostingWhy should you not host yourself: Self-hosting requires some work and patience. Hosting yourself is a bit like growing your own garden or vegetables: it requires work and patience. While YunoHost aims to do all the hard work for you, self-hosting still requires that you take time to learn and configure a few things to setup your server properly. You will also need to perform maintenance tasks. [..]

@caliandroidWhile this is absolutely true, the beauty of #yunohost is that it significantly lowers the barrier for entry, it's a quick win! If people find they like "gardening" there's nothing stopping them from learning more:) Speaking from personal experience, the existing options were too complicated for me, but thanks to yunohost I was able to set it up. My thinking is that if we want a better, decentralized internet we need to make it accessible to as many people as possible.@UmWerker

@lps @caliandroid To make the entry easier is the point I think. But when I look around, all younger people staring lethargic on their phones, watching others lifes, I'm not confident that own hosting will be charming to them. Perhaps there are enough doing their own thing so decentralized services will survive.

@UmWerker @lps @caliandroid Selfhosting is definitely for people who like to know how things works, with an open mind, ready to learn something new every day.

@mikloI think that there is a significat role for selfhosting without being concerned with the why or how, or even seeing it as self hosting. For example in my home I have an inexpensive VoIP box that I plug my home phone into. All I needed was to plug it in and make an account. If we had boxes like this for nextcloud installs or even xmpp servers using sbc's it would make these accessible to everyone who's even slightly interested in privacy/data sovereignty@UmWerker @caliandroid
