@josh I'm pretty sure though that Ukrainians gave up the nukes in exchange for money, which their ruling elite quickly embezzled. To be sure, I'm not entirely clear on the content of the Belovezh Accords, but I know this: until 2014, their government (including the one installed by the coup) continuously drew down and dismantled their military forces. So, they gave up nukes because they literally did not consider Russia a threat at all. That's how Putin rolled into Crimea with a token force and took over it with no shots fired (well, technically, there were shots fired to the air, for intimidation; but there was no resistance or fighting whatsoever).

Let's be real: Ukraine is worth nothing to us. The "worst case" scenario we're being presented with is a return to the 1991 status quo in that tiny part of the world. Is preventing that worth World War 2? Of course not.The USA needs to focus on where it is powerful: The Pacific. If we neglect that, we lose everything.
