A little Omicron perspective."Extremely mild". Fatigue "...with body aches and pains with a bit of a headache,” - with not "a sore throat...but more of a “scratchy throat”Courtesy of Dr. Lawrence Sellin:Note well - "nothing I have seen about this new variant warrants the extreme action...taken in response to it. No one here in South Africa is known to have been hospitalized with the #OmicronVariant, nor is anyone here believed to have fallen seriously ill with it."#COVID19 #USA

My question, which will remain a question:Since Omicron is a variant of the original Xi virus, does that mean that catching and surviving it will also produce antibodies which are effective at fighting the original and other variants? Given, of course, that not all 29 proteins are variants. IF (big if) that is true, and IF Omicron is determined in the long run to be not lethal at all - would that not make the Omicron variant a DESIRABLE form of a REAL VACCINE?That's my elf. On my shelf.

@StevenDouglas The bottleneck for creating a traditional vaccine is not so much having an attenuated (weakened) form of the virus, but learning how to grow the target virus in tissue culture at an industrial scale. That, and the various stages of clinical trials and regulatory approval, of course, which were streamlined by "Operation Warp Speed." The invention of mRNA vaccine technology overcomes the need to learn to grow the virus, which accelerated the development timetable considerably.

@StevenDouglas I'm a bit concerned that people generally won't distinguish between whatever safety and efficacy concerns that have been raised with the mRNA-based COVID vaccines (which have been amplified out of proportion and often mixed with a bunch of deliberate misinformation), and the underlying technology used to produce them, which is a useful addition to humanity's arsenal in fighting many other diseases. The heavy-handed mandates aren't helping with public acceptance, either.

@StevenDouglas I'm reminded a bit of another technology that would have some profound benefits for human health, and economic benefits as well, were it widely adopted, but which faces public acceptance issues: food preservation through the use of ionizing radiation. We already know how to extend the shelf life of fresh vegetables, meats, and other fresh foods, and largely eliminate the threat of food poisoning from harmful bacteria on them, but it's not in wide use.

@darulharb Yes, it's very unfortunate. The election was literally, in part, about what side everyone would take with regard to vaccines, with the left hating them before loving, embracing, and shoving them up everyone's ass-or-else. Valuable medical strides notwithstanding (acknowledged, appreciated), I'm Covid vaccine apathetic. And only due to the safety concerns of Covid itself - which were always amplified out of proportion and mixed with deliberate misinformation. To this day.

@StevenDouglas I think the lesson that should be learned from the COVID-19 pandemic is that we were actually very lucky that the virus that leaked from a research lab this time wasn't;t as deadly as it might have been. @StevenDouglas It seems unlikely that anyone's done a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis on whether it would be cheaper to adapt to whatever climate change is occurring, rather than rush ahead with half-baked plans to cripple the energy that powers an industrial economy. As we've seen from government-induced "lockdowns" during COVID, recovering from bad policy is not easy. And it's one thing to "shut down" temporarily, and quite another to try to swap out the engine while it's running.

@darulharb @StevenDouglas Jordan Peterson was talking to someone about this on his podcast recently, with Lundberg I think, about how in terms of protecting the environment, the ROI of economic development lifting people out of poverty and allowing them to be more concerned about the environment outweighed the increased resources they used. The Earth's population seems to be stabilizing rather than growing exponentially now.
