Does a competitive culture lead to jealousy? Is jealously mostly about self esteem? How do you distinguish between healthy competition and unhealthy competition? I'm not looking for a debate, just curious what people think.

@Zerglingman I'm just brainstorming some blog posts. About criticism, confidence, and related topics.

@pj I would think about these things from an evolutionary perspective. Useful to a limit, I suppose.

@bitcoinpasada Do you think 'winning' is more about nature and less about nurture?

@pj Interesting. There are different kinds of competitive. The kind like Enron or Tyco, based on pleasing a cult of corporate personalities by any means necessary. Then there are other kinds of competitive where internal teams challenge each others excellence like at Bell, NASA and IBM.So, I’d say, competition is a type of activity, the scope and flavor of that activity is probably more impacted by culture and example; so I’d generally distinguish healthy and unhealthy by circumstances of the competition and the result of the contest. Zero-sum tends towards unhealthy, collective success remains healthy longer.Jealousy is probably linked to self-esteem; how that is interpreted by the individual depends, I’d wager, on their specific needs (love, attention, money, respect, etc.) In my experience, jealousy seems to stem from perceived or real favoritism which results in real disparity. I could see competition bringing out such feelings, and if the culture is wrong, enhancing and exacerbating it.Thoughts?

@Hannibal I agree "the result" is important when choosing an activity. That could lead to a discussion about entertainment (What is entertainment?) And with that, I'm off to watch some stupid sci-fi show :-)

@Hannibal @pj jealousy is a subjective emotion. envy is objective.jealousy springs from being disappointed with self. someone seemingly advancing through goals better than you with same or less resources may make you jealous, feeling unsatisfied with self.the envious grows animosity towards the successful person, driving to sabotage.look at porn for instance: the jealous guy suffering from penis envy wishes he had a bigger penis. the envious guy quotes scripture classifying porn as a sin.
