PSA: COVID is a shitty disease for some people. I just read three ICU chest films in a row with very fat very bad lung findings from COVID…ages 45-60. Also, don’t be fat. For reasons not yet fully elucidated, this makes covid worse.

@max_1337 great question, simple answer: just about everything doctors say about obesity is ineffective. More complex answer: Medically supervised diets (ie, admit to hospital for a month or two) is no longer a service we can get paid for. Amphetamines for appetite suppression is roughly 10x less lethal than surgery for obesity, but doctors generally won’t do it anymore.

@btcdca strong work…it’s such a pain working with these patients…shuts down the room for 90 minutes when they’re on bipap…we do them at end of day but often it ends up being call team…which gets old after a few months…that said, central line business is up :-/

@drgo oh yea. And he had bilateral covid pneumonia. Unfortunately he passed 2 days later.very sad and takes alot out of us when we try to save these people

@btcdca people have no clue. I hate the claim: “they’re just diagnosing covid to bill higher” claim. Yeah, covid pays more. But not enough to cover the cost of care for a large fraction of patients. Fortunately, I have already had my bout with covid. It wasn’t fun, I had moderate disease…but other than wasting a week off and missing a few days of work (and getting out of a jury summons), it wasn’t an issue for society.

@drgo I got it after going on vacation (miami in march of 2020). tried to get tested but nobody had one yet. they said to come in if I could no longer breathe Fortunately it was gone in 48 hrs had the blue toes, dry cough, and extreme headache

@btcdca yikes…my wife lost smell and that was about it. I was laid flat for 3 days…slept for 40 out of 48 hours and was hacking my head off when awake. Lost 8 lbs due mostly to dehydration in a week (although I didn’t eat much, I was not at all interested in food).

@drgo right. But what about policies. We are seeing the worst draconian measures “against covid”… but there are no policies for better eating habits, etc. But it’s simple, eradicating obesity is not profitable.
