After reflecting at 80C; my near future plan is to keep running this indeterminatelySocialmedia is at dire times, I don't want to dump this cosy spot until we've better solutionsI strongly encourage ppl who can, run their own instances & just connect to usNOT YOUR INSTANCE NOT YOUR DATAI will keep signups closed, maybe invite only laterModeration rules will remain the same w/ the exception of being less understanding w/ ppl being dicks, that includes bitching about BH on Twitter

I appreciate the space here so I can learn more & be better at privacy & such while finding camaraderie. Iโ€™m more of a hands on make art & grow food/experiment with mediums that are super forgiving & more tangible for me. This stretch of my journey is very out of my comfort zone, which is good... thanks for the opportunity to help build for the future ๐Ÿ––

@KevinR4v @nvk Note that RPis really need good sdcards for stuff like Mastodon servers. So if you decide to try that, follow the official recommendations on what brand of SD card to get. There's special high endurance ones for applications like this. A bit more expensive. But it'll save you a lot of trouble.

@KevinR4v @nvk Also, more RAM will help with sdcard endurance by allowing more data to be cached, reducing the total # of writes. Probably not a huge improvement. But for $30 I'd do it.

@nvk fair enough, without a monetary obligation you limit your own obligations. thanks again for kickstarting this. the ability to export contact list is good as long as all contacts are not on bitcoinhackers.org

@pete @KevinR4v @nvk Consider installing Pleroma instead. It is compatible with Mastodon and using much less resources. Mine is using around 400MB RAM in total and depends on much less software. Only problem is it doesn't migrate accounts for now (will do in the next revision )

@jaime @pete @KevinR4v @nvk Pleroma is definitely better in every category. You will not regret it over Mastodon.

@pete @KevinR4v @nvk >pleroma on rpiThe sd card part is critical. I'd recommend putting at least the database and nginx cache on an external ssd.

@nvk Anygood tutorials out there on how to spin up your own instance? Rough cost of equipment and bandwidth requirements?

@nvk thanks for the invite acceptance! Excited to be here and Iโ€™m certainly appreciative of your instance and all of the costs, time, and effort that goes into maintaining it.

Can I connect to bitcoinhackers as a whole and not individual users?

@nvk @KevinR4v Start9Labs just released their Mastodon instance on their Embassy. I got it up and running in a few clicks. It's all over Tor though so bitcoinhackers can't see us. I guess it has to be enabled somehow? I"m posting here with my clearnet account.

@mutatrum @pete @KevinR4v @nvk Not sure about Mastodon hosting, but I can recommend the 1TB Samsung T5 "portable SSD". With USB3 the read/write speed is about the same as a typical hard disk, and faster than "sticks" or microsd. Cost is about the same as an internal HD. If you go the UHS-II route, you're going to pay more and still slower than T5. I formatted mine with ext4 no problem :-) https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/product/portable/t5/

@nvk Iโ€™m new at Mastodon and running my own instance from today. I have not got a full grip over Mastodon yet. How can I connect my instance to yours? Just follow members of interest?
