I'm an atheist but I do wonde this..!Religions who have a bible for example, how many parts are there? Or do people read the same book over an over again? 🤔 I mean, the bible is only but "a few pages" right, within some time you have read it all I guess? What then? 😮 I am curious!

@stux then you can spend the rest of your days trying to figure out how to use that to lead life as best as you can.I was brought up roman catholic, and I actually have fond memories of that: it was a friendly community that was open-minded about discussing morality and what it means to be/do 'good' in practice. Many bible texts are not clear-cut instructions, but are used as 'prompts' for further reflection and discussion.(I no longer feel part of it myself, but still have respect for it)

@stux Yup. Just read it again and again and again. Ever read a book and forgot the details later? That's one reason. Another is that you can read/understand it a little differently each time depending on where you are in your life journey. 🤓📚

@stux you do what some Christians like myself do, you develop a personal philosophy based on it. You take the lessons presented in the religious text as a whole and try to develop context in relation to yourself, your religion, and the world. Some like myself believe it as a guide and that the godhead was trying to get us to love and that the previous were, while good intentioned, wrong in their approach when they wrote down what they believed at the time to be the will of God. For example, love your neighbor, but kill the gays. However, Christianity teaches even love the gays and not kill because who is to say what is sin when you've sinned yourself. Long text is long

@evelyn Aha :blobcatgiggle: got it! And how many times does one read it average per life? :thinktink: I have no idea how many pages per time are read or anything at all :blobcatgiggle: Or is this depending on the church?

@stux took me 25 years of thinking to come up with that. Had to suffer, struggle, lose and then regain faith to get there

@stux from what I've learned they just do it like in Skyrim and meditate over the words. That's also where you get most of the medieval bullshit. When you ponder over a single sentence long enough you can read anything into it.

@stux Reading it cover to cover gives a very good overview of the earth from creation to destruction. Many will read it that was once a year or so. Once familiarity has been acquired, then going to specific areas of it to answer a single need or question will be easier. (Though with Bible apps, you can now do word searches so easy, it's quick to find what you're looking for)

@stux I read the book of Ecclesiastes into my podcast in four fifteen-minute episodes. Recommended.https://amoletters.comReading, reading again, reading aloud, and reading to others will allow a text to make different impressions on the reader. For texts on reducing the suffering of the world, different impressions and reminders can be helpful. If one can read a text, memorize it instantly and apply it perfectly from then on, this is not necessary. There's also just plain enjoyment.

@stux Most sacred texts have a canon fanfic library, (as well as a non-canon fanfic.) The Tora has the Talmud. The Bible has the New Testament and the Gnostic Gospels. The Quran has the Hadith and apostate text from (every other branch that isn't yours.) So there is plenty to read. That said, I can read the Dao de Jing each year and find totally new insight each time.

@stux my experience (raised protestant in germany) was that most of the bible is ignored by most christians. the things that are talked about make up maybe 10% to 20% of the bible.as a kid i expected that the sermons in church would go through all of it within a certain time frame, but eventually i realized how repetitive it was, and later how much i had never heard of.the things that get "cut out" tend to be the more boring, immoral, contradictory or nonsensical parts.

@stux Some very disciplined people aim to go through the entire Bible in a year. Assuming that they don't convert to another religion or become atheists, I'm guessing they'll keep reading year after year. 🙃
