I left my 'phone at someone's house. Even though it was inconvenient I had to retrieve it. Smartphones have become indispensable.

@fitheach At least you left it at someone's house and not on a bus or somewhere else where you wouldn't have got it back. And now you can spend the rest of your weekend without fretting about your phone.

@pandora I wasn't fretting about my 'phone, as I knew it was safe. It is just that the smartphone is needed for so many activities, like bank transactions, online purchases, and... making/receiving calls.

@fitheach All of our sites and applications are behind an app called Okta. In order to sign into Okta, I have to use the app on my phone to verify my sign-in. So if I don't have my phone, all our google apps, Slack, and internal admin panels are inaccessible.

@Magess I have problems with that assumption. If you were a joiner, would your employer expect you to use your own hammer, chisels, screwdrivers etc.? No, I don't think so. Why should it be different in IT?There is also the expectation that you need to use services from the likes of Google. This is something which you as an individual might not want to do. Then there is the requirement to install apps on your 'phone. A definite no-no in my book.

@fitheach I was without a cell phone for about 20 years. I finally got one, thinking well, maybe I might discover some new magic' some new meaning in life now that the tech is different. Nah. The only thing I use it for is to take pictures, and that not very often. I'm not going to carry it around anymore except when I go out to eat for the "table ready!" buzz. My dad doesn't carry his with him either. Nothing is so immediate that I need it handy.

@fitheach no means for calls: i have means but it's just inconvenient, not a huge problem because rarely do I have to talk to someone over a phonethe other stuff, the computer is okay enough, though I think I ran into a situation where I needed to be able to read a QR code onceDon't get me wrong. I know that eventually there will be no way around it. I foresee _all_ people wearing some form of phone like device on their person in order to just perform normal day to day activities

@fitheach Anker's line of little charge tanks are nice. You should find out the capacity of your smartphone battery. You will have to make a choice between a smaller unit that might only half or 2/3rd charge and one that can do from 0 to 100%

@gedvondur I usually keep my 'phone in my messenger bag. As I'd been playing music all day I had depleted the 'phone battery. I borrowed the USB port in my friend's PC to recharge the 'phone, and then left without it.A β…”rd charge would probably be sufficient. I only need enough to keep the 'phone going in a similar, future situation. That's two votes for Anker, already.

@fitheachApart from recommending Anker for quality, I'd say that battery packs are heavy, so get one small enough that you're going to carry it around. Better a small pack in your bag than a large one at home on the shelf.

@fitheach I meant to add that it may come as a surprise how much sun power we actually get. We get most of our off-grid power from the Sun, over the year. The only exceptions on the 6 weeks either side of the winter solstice. By the beginning of February, we no longer depend on the small wind turbine (and when there is no wind for several days, a small generator) to top up the batteries.

@fitheach It's hard to say exactly, but during the 3 winter months, less than a quarter or so comes from the sun, and during the depths of winter, we say we get nothing. But for a good 6 months of the year, we don't need wind power at all. The remaining 3 months, the combo of wind & sun works.I only measure input on a weekly basis & don't keep records. Perhaps I should.Part of the reason for not being exact is that input is different between solar and wind. 2/..

@fitheach 2. Solar output is managed by a controller, so as the batteries approach full charge, the output is curtailed. The wind charger puts all its output into the battery bank, and the excess is then managed by a different controller - the charger needs the battery bank to absorb all output. So you can't really compare total output directly.

@fitheach I hope it serves you well, bonus of the 10,000mAh is that it can be taken on planes 😁

@withaveeay So, do you get all your power requirements from your batteries?

@fitheach All electrical power yes. The DC runs through an inverter, and it's "normal" 230v in the house. Heating is solid fuel, cooking propane.I do know one off-grid person whose system is large enough to cook and even heat the house with his turbines and solar panels, and a monumental battery bank.

@withaveeay There will be losses convertin back to 230v, but, 12v devices are probably a bit limited. Are you happy with your solution? Is it cheaper?

@fitheach We run a 24v system, although we should have gone for 48v. Losses aren't high - inverters can be up to 94% efficient. There are some things I'd now do differently if we were starting again, like 48v, but yes, I'm happy. I'd like a little more wind power for winter. Some blog entries here: https://www.vasten.co.uk/blog/index.php?category/Off-grid-power

@fitheach Oh, "is it cheaper". Not cheaper than metred 'lexxy, but 4x cheaper than the extortionate amount SSSPD wanted to connect the house.

Well, I ordered my power bank. It didn't arrive. When I checked with the seller they claimed it had been "signed for" by me. On checking with Hermes they claimed it had been left in a "safe place". Not true either.Seller doesn't have the product anymore. However, they have promised a refund. What a waste of time, and a lot of hassle.

@gemlog I don't have a High Street. The nearest town doesn't have a store that sells power banks.

@Wizardofosmium Good idea. Just checked, not there. All the couriers are supposed to post a note through the door, indicating a parcel has been left in a safe place. That did not happen.
