@professortom I like the self-examination aspect of this video- acknowledging the disconnect between people who vote for liberal candidates and people who support liberal policies. It's a difference of "sounding good" vs. "doing good". That being said, buying a home is a way for average people to build some wealth and adding multi-family housing into those neighborhoods CAN potentially lower property values- especially rentals.

@pamby1 I agree that multi-family housing can devalue property. But if there’s a housing shortage and no one wants multi-housing built in their backyards, the end result is mass homelessness. What I thought the video did a good job of pointing out is that those who claim they believe in helping those of lower socio-economic status are not willing to sacrifice even just a little (multi-family won’t drive costs to $0) in order to achieve their stated goal of a more equatable world.

@professortom I get that hypocrisy was the point of your post. The subject matter hits home for me though because I live in a neighborhood where, believe me, no one's a millionaire. We've got solidly middle class families here who are "fighting" the building of an apartment complex at the entrance of our subdivision.(Not sure yet what if anything we can do.) Apparently zoning was changed over a decade ago and I wasn't "awake" then.

@sigma I definitely agree with that. I believe the majority of Americans have had a "live and let live" attitude that has not served us well in terms of keeping our country from the situation we're in now. President Trump had the right policy combination to appeal to the majority of Americans- as evidenced by his increase of 11,000,000 voters across ALL demographics- AND the right temperament to fight for it. We got a taste of our potential as a country while PT was in office. @professortom

@zleap The only thing I will say about "global warming" is that it is a political agenda, just like covid has become, that is ANTI- science and where there is ONE accepted narrative and dissenting arguments about how much of a threat either is, is silenced. Until all arguments are considered about both, I'm ignoring both as a SERIOUS threat.@sigma @professortom

@pamby1 @zleap @professortom 1) Coal is not going away (even under Dem admins) because it's fueling most power plants and Teslas. Natural gas is clean and usable alternative given the availability.2) Pam is correct. "Global Warming/Climate Change is a political agenda that Dems are not willing to respect. Just look at Obama's house and Pelosi's new house.3) We are in a cold historic global temperature period.

@sigma @pamby1 @professortom This is the problem that important issues end up as political agendasThere is tech available that allows us to burn coal more cleanly. We can plant more trees. As for cars / vehicles that use fossil fuels, effects on climate aside, the effects of breathing in Oxides of Carbon, Nitrogen, Sulfur as well as other chemicals are well known. So surely we need to look alternatives for that reason. I would much rather see more emphasis on other means of getting around clean.Oddly we have car charging points, which get their own power from burning fossil fuels We have the technology for all of this, just not the political will to act.

@sigma @pamby1 @professortom In some ways I also feel this is being weaponised by people, it is as if older people are causing the issue, we are trying to do the right thing, recycle more etc.I did write to Lidl UK a while back to ask about them using alternatives to plastic to wrap drinks cans for example. They do have a plan for this, so to me writing to companies and asking a question, suggesting ideas is far more useful than blocking motorways for example. People are not going to listen to people like Greta Thunberg if they feel she is just going to attack them for everything they try and do.

@pamby1 @sigma @professortom :)i Don't mind opposing views, as discussion leads to better solutions. The uk wants people to install heat pumps, very expensive, not sure how they remove heat from the air out side, during the winter when it is sub zero or very cold temperatures. We have the tech to install solar panels roof tops which can be used to heat water, that to me makes far more sense.

@pamby1 @sigma @professortom There is probably an issue of disposing of old heat pumps in years to come. It should be possible to make things so they can be recycled or at least last a long time, then be recycled. Again this is why we need to push STEM so people can come up with these ideas and solutions.

@zleap but of cause solar panels also make sense. there isn't a one size fits all solution. i don't think that hot water (~60°C) is the optimum for heat pumps. they are very good for floor or wall heating where you need temperatures around 25°C.@pamby1 @sigma @professortom

@zleap @sigma @pamby1 I don't think public transport is the answer, especially not in the middle of a pandemic. Furthermore, public transit does no good outside of densely populated cities.I have to drive to get anywhere I want to go. Round trip, I'd say my average drive is ~5 mi–and that's me "not going anywhere".It's ~15 mi from my place to downtown.

@zleap you get somewhere from 2× - 6× the energy as heat that you put into it. the english wikipedia article is pretty good! actual efficiency of course differs depending if you use the ground as heat source or air and how hot things have to get, eg. floor heating can be rather cold compared to radiators.@pamby1 @sigma @professortom
