I swear, every time I try a command line static site generator I get a stack of errors that I just don't want to debug. This time it was trying eleventy. I installed npm and got multiple error codes, and after trying to debug for a little bit I gave up and uninstalled the whole business. This is why I usually prefer a desktop app to CLI. If I can't get it running in 10 minutes, I don't want to mess with it. I've become an impatient weasel who wants things to work without excessive twiddling.

@cameron ever messed with Jekyll? I’ve not had many issues with it and it’s relatively easy to pick up. https://jekyllrb.com

@Clifford I tried that for a while last year, and also had trouble. Don't know why!

@cameron I feel some part of it is that these kinds of technology are kind of not fore the people as well. They are for hobbyists and enthusiasts or professional.I see people suggesting Jekyll which is kind of funny in response to this. I'm pretty sure you have used Jekyll as wellIDK I feel like a lot of tech people are way up their own bumBut it would be cool if more tech was made more people friendly and usable. This is the only reason I use wordpress for my personal stuff

@christoffer Exactly. I feel like I should be able to do a groovy static site with my current level of lightweight nerdiness. Ah well! Not trying to be divisive, but I do wish there were more static html solutions that were as accessible for novices as Wordpress.

@cameron @christoffer serendipity! I actually have a post in draft on this exact subject.SSGs are easy for devs, but not for the masses. If you want a static site, maybe a local Wordpress install, using an app like Local by flywheel, then a plugin that creates a static site from that.Upload the output, or chuck it in a git repo and away you go.

@cameron Yes, managing npm and all the modules and versions, global and local, can get messy...Jekyll is possibly easier, but it is also modular, and depends on Ruby and it's modules.I use Hugo, which is a single program, no modules scattered around anywhere.

@rzg I’ve thought about changing to Hugo a few times, but every time i think about it, Hugo just seems way more complex than Jekyll.@cameron

@kev I tried Jekyll initially, I don't remember the details, but aren't they are very similar?I decided on Hugo eventually, mainly because it is a single binary.I push my changes to a git repo, which builds and syncs the modifications to the web root. So, on the web server, I only need to have Hugo, instead of node, npm, ruby and all the modules. @cameron

@rzg @cameron they are similar and i like the idea of Hugo being a single binary. Ruby can be a bit of a pain with Ruby, but is generally fine once setup. It was more the way Hugo is setup in terms of filters, liquid etc. compared to jekyll.

@kev Ah, ok. My site is very simple, so I have likely not encountered many of the more detailed situations.

@rzg mine is quite simple too, I suppose it’s all about comfort - I’m use to Jekyll and it doesn’t have much of a learning curve for me.I may replace it at some point with Hugo, but for now im happy with it. Plus it’s the OG SSG. 😁

@kevI used to use jekyll, but found it a bit laboriousI am now looking to start blogging againI'm currently (still) looking at that middle ground between the behemoths like WordPress and the super light SSG's, the world of 'flat file' databaseless CMS and Blogs. The flat file concept seems like a more user friendly way to blog than SSG's, without the need of setting up a database ectIn regards to hosting solutions, I am trialing Oracle Cloud atm, and so far its been a good experience It is possible to create up to 6 VPS's on there 'always free' tier, (2 x 1GB RAM single x86 core, and 4 x arm ampere cores and 24gigs RAM to distribute over up to 4 instances) and spread 200GB block storage and 10TB of ingress traffic amonth between them, so I should have the ideal platform for whichever solution I end up choosing Once my 'trial period' on Oracle Cloud ends and I'm truely on their 'always free' tier, I will make a decision which way i'll start blogging (they aparently wipe/delete the trial VPS created at the end of 'trial period', but allow you to reset it up after)Also included is 10GB of object storage which I understand may be good for a SSG site if I do end up going there@rzg

@Jase if you’re thinking about flat file CMS, take a look at Grav. It needs PHP, but no DB etc. There’s also Blot, which is a managed solution.@rzg

@kev @christoffer That's timely - I'll enjoy reading that post when it comes out! I'm glad to know about Local, I hadn't heard of that. I have Wordpress burnout at the moment, but that's not a bad solution.
