my spicy take is that full decentralization isn't desirablewe should strive toward decentralization in general but some centralization is inevitable or even preferable -- the real desire is in ensuring that ownership and management are collective rather than in the hands of a powerful stakeholder who does "evil" (self-interest at the cost of others) things.basically, who can you trust, and for what? that's a matter of delegating authority. a lot of people will want to do that in any system.

@trwnh Not that spicy, the only people who think full decentralisation is desirable (or even possible) are libertarians, who think that the very idea of a community working together is already "zomg communism!!!"

@ainmosni it's spicy around these here parts :hotboi: you get a lot of techno-anarchists who want everything atomized and see federation as a stop-gap or stepping stone on the way to "fully decentral" systems like peer-to-peerwhich is admirable but not universalizable, imo. but that's fine as long as people are aware and have control over to whom and what they delegate!

@ainmosni think of, like, the selfhosting movement, which would prefer that everyone maintain their own centralized server. that, in effect, is a more promising way forward that maintains the convenience of centralization while still allowing social decentralization at effectively "one level up".but not everyone wants to be a server admin, of course. you will still have people forming community servers because people will want to delegate away the stuff they don't want to (or can't) do.

@trwnh yeah. What if an instance of activitypub-powered server is administered by bad people with authoritarian approach to control a community?

@matrisen that's a problem for that server onlywhich brings up a different topic, technical decentralization vs social decentralizationthe fediverse has some technical centralization around servers -- it is a decentralized network of centralized networks, essentiallybut it is socially decentralized because federation allows you to start using a different server or spin up your own, so you are never beholden to any one party
