@mike This instance is silenced on quite a few 'big' fedi instances. I definitely know Pine64's account doesn't see my posts, I've responded with answers to questions they've asked and got nothing. I don't think they're being rude or anything.@funkwhale

@thatbrickster Well, I can say unequivocally that we don't currently block traffic from your instance. Individuals might, but not the instance as a whole. All the instances blocked by #Fosstodon can be seen on the About/More page. Of course, your free to ask if you've got any questions.@funkwhale

@mcread There are some instances that #Fosstodon blocks as an instance. Those decisions are not made by individuals. Our moderation team decides them as a group. You can rest assured, if an instance gets blocked, it's not for no reason. It may be for a reason you don't personally agree with, but a reason none the less. Our team is available for questions if you have them.@funkwhale

@mike @funkwhale The premise of these bans is all wrong in the first place, if the content is questionable, the solution is not to ban the source of it, because this will just create distortion bubbles , where this kind of content is heavily emphasized and gets no counter winds ... this is how perception problems get accentuated . It's not by accident we have that saying: " keep your friends close, and your enemies even closer "

@funkwhale The question has come up many times actually, and I expect it will continue to. That particular instance (along with several others) has been particularly problematic. So far, we've come down on the side of dealing with issues on a user by user basis. We do HIGHLY encourage people to report individuals engaging in the behavior you mentioned. It may be that an instance ban is the appropriate action.

@mike So why exactly don't you block an instance which is "particularly problematic" in your eyes? How do you protect your users from harassment of their instance without blocking an instance which gives this stuff a platform?

@funkwhale Sometimes it's a cut and dry situation, and sometimes it's not. When we see an instance like nazi.social (a real instance btw), it's not a hard decision to block it. Instances like shitposter.club are more ambiguous. Yes, there is some highly objectionable material. There is also some material that our community may find value in. Our decision so far as has been to block problematic users at an instance level, which keeps those users from interacting with any member of our instance.
