I don't find it surprising in the least that Western was the most popular genre of fiction by far in America until the 1960s. How could it not be? It's our mythos. We lacked the millennia of history that European nations had, but we possessed a wild frontier that they lacked. I've spent months on end in the wilderness of the Colorado Plateau and it's difficult to explain but there's an impact that I believe the West has on the White man's soul. It's symbolic of independence, danger, toughness, fearlessness. The reason that the cowboy is the archetypal symbol of the great American, rather than the colonial soldier or the president or the captain of industry....>I'm brainstorming an essay detailing the Aryan full-circle that the cowboy caps off. Basically, the proto-Indo-Europeans herded cattle on horseback in the arid Pontic steppe, eventually subduing mongoloids and establishing a vast civilization stretching across the xeric middle east as well as sylvan Europe. I theorize that the obvious parallels with White settlement in the West, and cowboys in particular, influence the modern Aryan's natural gravitation toward the Western mythos in the collective subconscious
