@Debradelai Yes, he was from the generation of my maternal great grandparents also, who were from shtetls around Kiev.The official language of the country was Russian, but they mainly spoke Yiddish — a magical language! Although…growing up I learned a few choice Russian curses. 😀

@Debradelai Maybe we’re related. 😀I wish I knew which shtetl my grandparents were from. The only records I’ve found show Kiev, but I’m sure they were from shtetls around Kiev.They were observant Jews. 3 brothers married 3 sisters in arranged marriages. The offspring are “super cousins.”I have a pic of the family gathered on a rooftop on the lower East Side. It appeared in “The Forward”newspaper, as it was one of the largest Jewish families assembled for a pic. Will post it.

@Debradelai Here’s that rooftop photo — 1917, Lower East Side, NYC. The “elderly” couple in the middle are one set of my maternal great grandparents, Moishe & Taube, from somewhere near Kiev. They were only 60 y/o at the time.I counted 45 people in the pic, which also has 2 added (“old-time photoshopping!) who couldn’t be present.My mother wasn’t born yet. @rarity @Debradelai I have some on my media, have to hunt for it though I post alot of pics and stuffMine came from Europe back in 1700s then more in 1800s, they also had to learn english and also helped build this nation, so glad they all cameI am glad we have new immigrants who learn to love this nation and continue to fortify it with new generationsThey have left behind nations that were unforgiving and now know what true freedom is

@Lemonhead @rarity @Debradelai My dads dad came from Parma Italy when he was 14, worked in many states , including the Biltmore estate. He ended up in NY @ the Plaza hotel. Maitre D in the Oak Room. I didn’t know him, died a few months after I was born. Would have loved to hear his stories
