A poll about location service on your mobile device!By default, do you have your location service enabled or disabled?

@stux This should be, in my opinion, be a no brainer. Of course you turn it off when not needed, all the wasted battery life and privacy implications are just not worth it keeping it on all the time.

@critical @stux If it has a internet connection, you can enable the location. Or just wipe it.

@critical @stux Samsung has fixed this, IF (big IF) you use their version of 'Find my Android' (or whatever it is called). It even can find mobile phones when they are offline, at a privacy cost.

@stux it is "on" most of the time, as in "allowed to come on". Very few apps actually use it, and none that I don't trust. It's basically the same as keeping it off unless needed but it's easier

@stux I'm in the disabled camp, but here's a fact which people may not be aware of:GPS is receive-only, so it cannot be used to track you without an app using the received data to send it back via a network. The apps are the tracking part of GPS, not GPS itself.

@stux This is why I would consider a pine phone, if I can physically remove the GPS module then the location services are disabled full stop.

@stux Location service under Android is mandatory for the Corona contact tracing app scanning for Bluetooth beacons.

@stux I would totally advocate for keeping it off, tho my country uses the "corona contact tracing germany" app, which required location services. And I really think, that this app is useful and trust it, because it survived a lot of security audits, is fully open source and, at least this variant, free from google services.

@Zeno Same here mate! :cat_hug_triangle: Only our app doesn't need location service (at least not on iOS) but uses BT for that :blobcathearts: It's also open source and tested big time

@stux It doesnt use the location on android either, it's just proximity measuring using BLE or something like this falls under the location service.

@zleap @stux what of bluetooth, wifi and cell towers? gps is the least invasive of them. gps does not respond to satellite. does gps have to emit?

@stuxSeems like every app pressures me to turn iton, but I'm basically paranoid about it. Even so, I don't really trust that it's really off.
