His defense lawyer argued that if he was an active shooter, he would've been shooting indiscriminately, but they argued he shot people he was directly engaging with. "In self defense."The prosecution did not do a good enough job with Rittenhouse on the stand and Wisconsin's self defense laws are designed to protect the shooter. In America if a juror has a "reasonable doubt" which means even a shred of an inkling they might not be 100% guilty, you must not vote to convict. It is "innocent until proven guilty,"...beyond a shadow of a doubt. His defense apparently left the jury with reasonable doubt that he might've acted in self defense and of course the self defense laws in Wisconsin were in his favor. America is a country founded on guns and the "Wild Wild West" legacy means that we have too many guns, too many people doing stupid things with guns, and too many attitudes that translate to laws allowing people to do stupid things with guns and get away with it.

He brought a gun to a protest nowhere near himself, his property, etc., knowing full well he intended to use that gun. Had the protest been occuring right outside his front door, and he shot someone coming in the door, that would be self defense. But he didn't do that. He played Hollywood action hero, killed some people, and then got away with it.... probably because he's a pasty white boy, and the judge could see himself in the kid's face, and worried what jail time might do to his appetite.

It would have to be sorted legally, according to the legal parameters of self-defense as are laid out in the law of a state. But even if Rittenhouse was intentionally in the “wrong” place, with the “wrong” weapons on his person, he was entitled to defend his life. Crossing state lines with a weapon doesn’t mean it’s open season on the person open carrying. If the citizens of WI have a problem with the principle of open carry, I am sure they can use this to make their case for reform.

The racists in the Midwest have long wanted the "right" to kill black people and their allies at protests. But of course this was a racist attack- The protest was against police shooting a Black man in the back seven times while his children watched. The men who were killed were there as allies of POC. By exonerating Rittenhouse of killing these two men, the court has essentially caved to the desire of basically all the bigots across the US who have longed for permission to kill BLM protesters and their allies. Now they have it. Now NONE of us are safe now at any kind of protest that displeases conservatives. This decision has wide-reaching implications.I am not a supporter of "antifa" because it's basically a group of young white brats out to trash shit for fun, and they essentially raised the level of violence at these protests, creating a free-for-all atmosphere that undermines the serious nature of the protests, which are to bring attention to the rampant police violence against POC. I support the CONCEPT that Black lives matter, but not the individuals who claimed leadership of BLM and used that title for grifting. These individuals do NOT represent the movement itself, which is really a local movement of groups that are not connected to each other. It's important to make these distinctions because the credibility of a few individuals should not be allowed to drag down important movements. That's part of the problem, and why the general public is so confused. The media and a handful of fame-seeking individuals have degraded a legitimate protest movement to the point that the original purpose is no longer the focus of protests, and police are going to continue getting away with murdering POC. The dimwits who are defending Rittenhouse are steadfastly refusing to acknowledge the racism behind his murderous agenda. This deliberate obtuseness is robbing a significant portion of the population of their basic civil rights to gather and state their objections to injustice. NONE of the "counter protesters" were at the protest in good faith. It's the job of the police to protect property. So what were they protesting? They object to holding police accountable for race-motivated crimes. That's what the media should be focusing on. These armed vigilantes are a racist force of oppression that is sweeping the country. The attempted coup of January 6th should spark terror into the heart of every American. Our entire democracy is in jeopardy if we refuse to recognize these actions as domestic terrorism.

Your argument is fine as long as the story was Rittenhouse shoots grown ass armed men committing crimes, burning down businesses with people still in. Precisely because he was walking around acting as if he was doing voluntarily what the police are paid to do. It takes training and maturity to do what armed police do. In order so this type of situation does not happen. Those victims where not Criminals. They where confused about what they were seeing. And they paid with their lives. In all the documents I've read none of them state that. He was at a car dealership, nothing portrays him as a rioter just someone at the scene. The second guy was out there due to personally knowing the victim the activists where protesting over. Yes if none of them had been out it wouldn't of happened. But that misses the point. @Kay I think at the end of the day no matter how much we can put our best argument forward, there’s just some things some people won’t agree on. I’m a big believer in self defense for women escaping domestic violence, who very often are jailed, while actual male abusers are allowed to continue their abuse. And by saying this I mean that there are grey areas in so many aspects of life, nothing is as simple as “murder is always bad” or “rittenhouse was innocent/is an angel”. I haven’t watched the whole thread (couldn’t even if i wanted to, damn that things long!) but sometimes we have to realize we won’t change each others minds. That doesn’t mean we can’t discuss but being conscious of what we’re giving our energy to. I’m sorry that she said that/butting in for my freeduhms but simplifying an entire country down like just doesn’t apply to reality. Nothing is as simple as good or bad, and “just doing the right thing.” Life outside of our imagination/philosophy can be real messy.... Lots of love to you though for real, we’ve all been there, finding ourselves a million messages deep with someone who just wont agree with us haha

I probably should have just ignored it, but it's really easy to interpret a bad meaning from that comment, given the subject matter. I know I'm not going to convince any gun nuts to reconsider. I do not believe this is a grey area example. If we were talking about a woman who murdered her abusive husband, I'd agree. There are lots of examples of that happening, and by some miracle, the judges always seem to consider that murder. Even in Canada. We had a case, I think in the 90's or early 00's, where a woman shot her abusive police officer husband after years of abuse. She went to prison. Not for very long, but she still saw the inside of a prison cell. Because she did take a life. She, and other women like her, should be given the leniency that this murderous teen got. No one cared if those women could still participate in sports or enjoy a nice steak after going to prison. But people suddenly care a great deal, when it looks like access to guns in the US could maybe be ever so slightly limited, for safety reasons. Then it all falls apart, and your country folk get very "they're takin' ma guns!!!".

@senryu There is no legal Blackhole. In fact it solidifies the definition of self defense. Stand your ground, retreat to safer place when one has means to do so. Don't go chasing and trying to attack other armed citizens trying to leave a dangerous situation or run straight to law enforcement under the guise of false ideals and beliefs (he's active shooter, etc.). This court decision really does discourage vigilante action and leaves the hammer of justice in the hands of law enforcement. The only people allowed to chase law breakers are law enforcement while at same time allows people to have the means to fend fend for themselves, their livelihood, and their family in the case where order breaks down. That's a lot better than arbitrary restrictions and the dark path down false beliefs and senses of justice that the rest of this thread seems to want to go.

Men have been killing women with their bare hands for centuries before guns were invented.A gun is nothing more than a weapon/tool. The person who would use it for criminal harm is the factor that must be dealt with. We don't hand the car keys to kids and we should keep kids from easy access to guns (like so many of us do already and have done for years). I hate how women get patted on the head, patronized and told that if those bad old guns are taken away, then they will be safe. That is a lie and all you have to do is look at all of human history before guns were invented to see it.

It's not patronizing to look at gun death statistics in the US compared to all other comparable nations and see the data and know more children and women would be alive if we got rid of guns.

Tell you what, go visit terfisaslur.com and see how many of just the trans cult men are ginning themselves up to attack and kill women. When you have some insane knife swinging TIM coming at you in the UK, he is going to take you out easy. When some insane knife swinging TIM comes at me in red state I live in, he might catch a few rounds in the torso. I might survive. So you can hope that Big Daddy Government taking away the only means of self-defense that can put you on equal footing with a male attacker works out for you. I will not depend on that - not when you have the UK police firmly on the side of the men who hate us.....

The stats don't lie.Unfortunately the counter argument (you need good guys with guns to stop bad guys with guns) is purely emotive; it has no basis in reality. First off, define your terms. What's a good guy? What's a bad guy? Second - how quickly can an untrained civilian deploy a firearm against a threat? (spoilers - not fast). Thirdly - knowing that guns are common and easy to get hold of doesn't make people more respectful and civilised in their behaviour to each other, it just turns the heat up and creates a state of high general anxiety. Don't believe that - look at the state of unjustified shootings by police officers who clearly are shit scared and twitchy as fuck. And they're supposed to be the ones with training. Every weapons amnesty programme ever instituted demonstrates that the more weapons get taken out of circulation, the less incidences of use there are. I saw this close up when living in Glasgow, which ran a series of knife amnesties (alongside other social measures), and managed to bring knife crime down by 50% over ten years. The US firearms model is the exact opposite of this dynamic, and the only thing it has going for it is a series of crude Hollywood stereotypes.Unfortunately, Anglo culture (seen this in the UK too) has spent the last several decades despising learning and academic expertise, while aggrandising gut emotions and "seat of the pants" instinct as the "right" way to behave. So when it comes to a showdown between hard math & stats on one side and Hollywood iconography on the other, guess which wins out?

@Quellist1 Yeah, for every gun nut who says more guns is the answer, all they have to do is look at the global statistics. Take Japan for example.I watched a study of gun violence worldwide not too long ago. They were comparing international gun deaths to American gun death rates, (which has the HIGHEST level of gun violence in the developed world btw). The death rates and gun control laws in Japan for example, are absolutely astonishing. Get this: Japan's firearm and sword control law states"No person should posess a firearm." -Before listing a few exceptions for hunters and other categories. Here are the results of this legislation:For the few people brave enough to apply for a gun in Japan, they face an intricately designed bureaucratic obstacle course. They asked former US marine, Rick Sacca, (who was living on Mount Fuji in 2013). He told reporters that he was one of only a handful of foreigners in Japan to legally own a gun. He showed them the binders full of paper work he had to deal with over the years. Sacca took over 20 HOURS of lectures, took a written test, a shooting range class, and he passed a criminal background check. Then a Doctor gave him a full physical and psycological exam, he also visited the police station 5 times where he was interviewed in an interrogation room! They asked him things like: "Do you have any problems with drugs? Do you have any problems with alcohol? Are you having any problems in your relationship, family, work, money etc?"The police also questioned Saaca's family, his coworkers, even his neighbors! And to top it off, he even had to give them a detailed map of his house and where the gun would be stored along with photos that detail all the locks on the safe that the gun would be kept in to show that it's done properly. It took Saaca **over a year** to be approved and he must renew his various licenses regularly. (In America anyone can get a gun the same day and we had to fight to get background checks). Saaca stated "The intrusion that has to be done regularly, would never be tolorated in the US." It is a process meant to discourage people from even trying to buy a gun. And it works.As a result of these strict gun laws, Japan has one of the LOWEST gun violence rates in the entire world. Japan has fewer guns per person than any other country, with less than 1 firearm for every 100 people and the countries gun murder rate is astonishingly low: in 2016 this nation of 127 million people counted just 13 gun murders in total nationwide!
