       @socjuswiz @FloatingGhost the answer is more complicated and mostly related to development.- code that detects mentions is/was a bit quirky so seeing undetected mentions helps with development and debugging. From user perspective the weird thick "@" means it will open in same tab to the user profile but regular textual "@" will open in a new tab as it's a regular link.- in earlier stages of development it was possible to have mentions appear as "buttons", discord-style, the custom "@" looked better and a bit more controlled . This got removed in the end but will be brought back.- using icon gave possibility for future modification provided by FontAwesome, i.e. have it slashed for non-notifying mentions (this is not yet implemented), have different icon for hashtags, groups (groups when?) etc.someone on gitlab also suggested possibilty of using user avatar instead of an "@", so there's that.
