My mom went in for her pacemaker checkup. Turns out her heart is 100% dependant on the pacemaker. Thank you my most Holy God for keeping my mom alive

@DrewInExile I’ve worked almost 30 years in the “pacemaker business” both in a hospital and for a manufacturer. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.

@RicardusRex I do have a question! In a few years, her pacemakers battery will run out. They'll be able to keep her alive and replace it, right?

@DrewInExile Pacemakers are designed to give a notification called the Recommended Replacement Time (RRT) or Elective Replacement Indicator (ERI). When this notification is indicated, she will have about 3 months to get the generator changed. The physician is made aware of the notification either: 1) when she is seen in the clinic & her device is checked via the programmer, or 2) if she is on remote monitoring an alert will be sent to the clinic. Most important is to make it to scheduled visits.

@DrewInExile The generator change procedure is pretty straight forward as long as the wires going to the heart, called ‘leads’ (pronounced ‘leeds’) are good. Takes about 30-45 mins and is done under sedation. Typically goes home same day unless they have to replace one of leads.
