Is Canonical paid to advertise VS Code, Spotify, Slack, and Discord in the default Ubuntu installation?

@be I wouldn't jump to that conclusion, only because these would simply be the most popular snaps. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if they indeed were being paid.

@downey @be would be for this as long as some conditions are met:* It's apparent as to what's paid for to be put there* There's a higher concentration of non-paid-for apps* There's a higher concentration of free software* The apps don't actively harm the individual (no scams, viruses, etc)* Users are not forced to install those apps* Users are not "recommended" to install them.* No apps that require subscription* Pricing is transparent* Pricing is higher for non-free-software1/2

@downey @be * privacy labels are included and must be provided by the entity paying for the ad, especially for non-free software* Some other stuff I surely will think of a few hours from now2/2

@downey @be There is a clear lack of funding in open-source... this would be one of the ways that that could be resolved.Canonical could even use part of that funding to donate to other projects.

@brandon @downey I disagree that advertising proprietary software is a good idea for funding free software.

@brandon @be i agree about the funding challenges. Keep in mind Canonical made US$140,000,000.00 last year...

@be @downey considering how many companies that produce proprietary software use Canonical and RedHat's services, and how much of that money is reinvested into producing free software code, I don't think that there's an argument that free software could continue to advance at today's pace without funding that's tied to proprietary software.

@be @downey If the software was going to be shown at the top due to popularity ranking, what difference does it make?

@be @downey If the software was going to be shown at the top due to popularity ranking, and there's already money tied to proprietary software helping fund free software, what difference does it make?

@fiddle @djsumdog @be yes they are the major snaps available, I think that's why they're highlighted. Canonical loves eating their own dog food, or at least forcing it on their users. 🐶 :KoroneSmileD:

@brandon @be @downey For one, advertising is always a game that involves a whole lot of hope. Or tracking data. Anything advertising related is going to involve data mining to, at minimum, optimise the returns on the advertising dollars spent. That's a bad road to head down.

@simon @downey @be that would be revenue, they made 20M profit last year for the first year they were profitable (likely also ended up paying debts)
