@Cousin_Isobel As someone who worked on many excessive force cases in my legal career, I think the evidence shows he's guilty but I think he will get off either because juries don't like to convict clean cut white boys (but are happy to vote on the death penalty if the defendant was black) or because the judge will set aside any guilty verdict and acquit.

@Cousin_Isobel @admin Does the US have very different rules about prejudicing a trial from the UK?I ask because merely posting that question about an ongoing criminal trial in the UK could be used by the defence to try to argue that the defendant wouldn’t get a fair trial. People in the UK get very used to skirting round stuff that’s sub judice - even if you think a person is guilty as sin, if you know anything about how the system works, you avoid saying so in public while the trial is ongoing in case the bastard walks on a technicality.

The Mirror ran a headline the day before the verdict was due in and collapsed the trial. The footballers walked.I don’t think anyone in the city (even the die-hard United fans) thought justice had been served.

I do know that, in the U.S., if press coverage is projected to be a problem, the jury can be sequestered so that they never see any news. The most famous case in which that happened was the OJ Simpson trial.

@Cousin_Isobel @EmmyNoether @admin Not a lawyer, but I think it can go into mistrial if the judge or jury is shown to be influenced by publicity. A mistrial isn’t the same as letting the guy walk free. Means the prosecutors can file for a new trial with new rules, as opposed to the guy being acquitted and immune from further charges on the same crime. More likely, I think, is a grounds for an appeal filed by the defense if he’s convicted, but they have to prove influence. I don’t think a post of spinster ranks, tho. You should see the sh!t on twitter.

He is also guilty under other legal theories. Excessive force is viewed on a continuum, so his decision to be present and armed goes to his state of mind that he intended to commit acts of violence. His performance on the stand was rather blatant and evidence of sociopathy.

What were they doing? Did they encourage him? Did they know? He's trying to appear as young as possible, as I'm sure he was advised to do by his lawyers, but I assume he is being tried as an adult.
