linux "experts" need to chill tf out tbh. accept it, linux sucks, and i say this as a linux user. it is not built for mass market adoption, the terminal is only there for freaks like me who actually like it, normal people don't want to tinker and fix and debug. they just want software that works. if your buy a car and it breaks down on first drive, do you want to have to tinker and fix it yourself? if you buy an appliance and it breaks first run, do you want to have to open that thing up? we specialize for a reason, and you can't blame people for not wanting to learn how an operating system works to install goddamn steam of all things

@gamer > it is not built for mass market adoptionit is not built, periodthe truth is, linux as a base can be a perfectly fine, even superior operating system for end user general purpose computing or even gaming. the reason it *isn't* is because that work simply hasn't been done yet, except where it's profitable. this is why you see gnu/linux dominate the server world and android/linux dominate the phone world -- that work was done because it was profitable. desktop linux simply isn't there

@gamer I get the sentiment, but let's be honest - it's not that Linux "sucks". It takes more work to get/keep running well, yes, and is less new user friendly. However, it has lots of other things it does really well that very much make it worth using.

@gamer Haiku is an open-source clone of BeOS and is actually intended to be a desktop OS and nothing else. ReactOS is an open source clone of Windows but has some major bugs and has been in alpha since it was started back in 1996.

@gamer I have a decade old netbook that I adore, but it shipped with Windows 7 which it could barely run even with a RAM upgrade and a SSD. I installed a lightweight Linux distro on it and it worked fine for all the stuff I needed it to do - basic browsing, text editing, scripting, file management and backup, and even a bit of Mathematica work. But goddamn trying to do anything more complicated than installing an already made package was an exercise in looking something up on the internet and slamming into the terminal. It got worse as time went on.So about a month ago I decide to bring it out and update a few things so I could use it at work. Simple enough. Except that any installer through the terminal was broken. Why? The Let's Encrypt certificates weren't updated for this year's kerfuffle. They wouldn't have updated automatically either. So I had to update this manually. So off I go. Simple enough terminal command. Except that HTTPS was not working because of the expired certificates. Can't update the certificates because the certificates aren't updated. So I looked up the problem and it involved digging through a buried certificates file, commenting out a line in it, and forcing the system to reload the certificates file through the terminal. Success. Then I continued updating. The entire process took an hour or so.Now imagine you're not a complete fucking nerd who already physically upgraded your computer and reinstalled an OS on it yourself. You're just some normalfag who's wondering why the fuck their internet won't work so now they have to bring their laptop down to some computer repair place where the guy has no experience using linux and charges the poor normalfag $120 for repairs.Year of the Linux desktop indeed.

@gamer my parents run linux just fine. it just works for them.this preconception you have that linux requires tinking & fixing & debugging: it's your conception. it's one widely held, and this conception is, more than Linux, what holds linux back from adoption. there is a poisonous mindset about what linux is & how it works.linux does need to make gains too. but it's hard to figure out how to help, when it's shallow & narrow preconceptions that try to steer the conversation.

@jauntywunderkind420@cybre.space sorry, mindset about how linux works? its not just a mindset when you have testimony after testimony about how linux just doesnt want to work or "i broke this because i tried to do (insert normal activity)". my mindset might hold linux back, but the biggest hurdle that holds linux back is the difficulty of use and maintenace for any new user. an OS should not have to be something that's learnt. its a tool to facilitate the use of a computer and programs to do things a user wants to do. windows and mac, for all the crap i give it, are seanless experiences for the majority of users. linux, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. so dont come to me with "ugh, its just your conception" when there has been testimony after testimony of problems for new users. just because it works for you, doesnt mean it works for everyone

@gamer is this in reference to the linus tech tips video?in any case, all i can say is this: now that i haven't used a mac or windows system for anything at all in years i feel comfortable in stating that i would not know how any of it works except the most basic functionality of browsing the web and downloading programs.also if windows or mac warned me i was about to delete finder and i needed to literally spell it out well. . .

@gamer like i get it, use the right tool for the job, and in many cases that means using something that doesn't use linux. i'm not some evangelist. but this idea that linux is so fundamentally broken that it can't be used without being an expert or willing to waste time is just wrong.it's just a different way of doing things, a way of doing things where it isn't a hackjob to use a command line and just part of the UI, and most of the time it's not even necessary if you're using a nice DE.

@teh_dude@freeradical.zone nah man, im not saying linux is fundamentally broken. im saying that the average users experience of linux tends towards being absolutely terrible, as evidenced by tesimony after testimony of poor experiences. linux is not yet there. you cant just install linux without there being a massive asterisk. its a different way of doing things, yes, but its a way that requires time and effort that most people frankly do not want to spend on making the OS part of their compter work

@gamer Well… Things are a little more complex than that. First, I don't think that Linux, as an OS (for most distribution) is to blame. It is far easier to produce a user-friendly system when you have tons of cash to either :1. get a monopoly to ensure every third-party software will be develop with your OS in min first,2. manufacture your own hardware so you have the guarantee that the OS will always run smoothly on it and will be easier to maintain because HW fragmentation is reduced.

@gamer Linix fits in neither of these cases and, however, competes surprisingly well despite that. Sure, it's a pain to setup on some hardware. But remember, it doesn't fit case 1 and still manage to handle a wide range of hw pretty well.Actually, time has shown that when big tech starts to take Linux in account, everything is way better.

@gamer The improvements made in gaming thx to AMD's policy, Nvidia that didn't get a choice and Valve that threw a shitload of money into Linux dev proves that Linux can be a serious OS challenger for general public.Imagine now what could be done if, let's say, Asus decides to only sell Linuxes tomorrow?I'd say it would be as relevant as Windows and osX.

@AugierLe42e@diaspodon.fr look man, i aint here to argue about linux being good or bad or whatever! i aired out a sentiment that arose due to the maintainers of pop os shaming a user for a bug thats their fault. its not about linux being good or bad. please ive had enough of you people trying to defend an operating system of all things like if you like it then cool! im.complaining about all the elitist pricks who think its reasonable for new users to immediately become linux experts as soon as they encounter any technical problem that those same experts deem "not worth my time to help solve"
