Oh wow, the recent videos from @EposVox@twitter.com and @LinusTech@twitter.com really reveal where #Linux distributions have to improve. We have to face it, the current situation is not ideal for people who want to migrate and might scare them completely away, so they never want to come back.

@Corben78 Any computer repair shop I ever worked at made our bank off of Windows update being trash and causing users problems forcing them to bring in systems to be fixed. My point is that every OS has issues and if people use that as an excuse to hop from one to the other then not only will they never be happy they were also not serious abiut migrating in the first place. Bugs aren't an issue exclusive to Linux.

I am totally biased though, as I'm using #Linux since decades, with that experience most problems are solvable. But new users facing problems where the installation of a program uninstalls the desktop environment or an update breaks the complete system? How should the fix this?

In case you missed it, here is @EposVox@twitter.com experience with #Linux, where his ride starts so splendid... and then it all fell together 🤦‍♂️But he is not discouraged yet, and wants to cover Linux more in his videos, I'm looking forward to those!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zOrkjPMajY

And here is the first part of @LinusTech@twitter.com, where Linus and Luke show their experiences. At least for Luke it went a bit better, but still not really a great experience.I'm looking forward to the next parts of their challenge!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0506yDSgU7M

With the #SteamDeck and the improvements coming to #Linux where #EasyAntiCheat and #BattlEye protected games work (if devs enable it), #CEG DRM working with #Proton, Linux has more attention than ever!Let's be nice to the newcomers, we don't have many chances to do this right.

@Corben78 especially since the alternative is operating systems that break themselves in opaque ways. Anyway... I dont want Windows users who expect Linux to behave like Windows to come to Linux. Every OS is supposed to be different and if you are not willing to learn and fail on the way, stay with what you are used to. This advice is true for many things in life.

@boilingsteam I agree, you need to be willing to learn. To read. To pay attention to the warnings. Fail and get up again. My way to go.But I see when people do "normal" things, like installing a widely used program (steam), or updating their system (never change a running system 🙈) and these things completely bricking the PC with no clue what's going on, even making it necessary to reinstall the OS? That shows something went horrible wrong and it's not the users fault where the user should fail

@Corben78 the same rule is still valid as always. If you have no idea what you are doing dont expect things to work. I have been using Linux for 15 years now and I have never managed to brick a system beyond recovery. Worst was Nvidia drivers landing me back to a console the next book because they broke X. How they manage to break their system by installing Steam is beyond me. They should realize they have no idea how Linux works and call it a day.

@boilingsteam For Pop!_OS the issue was that the 32bit version of steam was never published, so it had to fall back to previous version to solve dependencies with lead to the uninstall of certain packages. It got fixed in the mean time, they even updated apt to not even allow the uninstall of those necessary packages anymore with just entereing "Yes, do as I say!" anymore. For Garuda I've heard it was a GPG key not being updated issues, which apparently occured already more than once.

@Corben78 also, Linux can break because there are no safeguards in it. You could erase your root partition by mistake if you really wanted to. With power comes responsibility and you dont approach Linux half drunk or "just to do an experiment". You need to fail, understand what you did wrong, and become more knowledgeable time after time. Its not a weekend trip.

@boilingsteam I know. I guess they know too :)Hey, they didn't gave up, they tried to solve those issues. I think after a while they also realized, what happened. But "we" (at least I) try to show that it's possible to play games on Linux and that it's not really that hard. Which... well indeed it isn't. For me. But maybe I'm already blind to certain issues, that totally need fixing. And yes, I want more people to use Linux, so we finally get official support from companies.

@boilingsteam LOL :DI'd have recommended Ubuntu to them. Or even plain Arch, when somebody helps them to at least show them the fast install script or tell them which packages to install. That's the only really tricky thing with Arch... what software to use, for what problem? I mostly knew from my experience, so it was easy to me. And the fast install script seems to do help in that regard as well (haven't tried it yet though). Why any of those two? Because Valve uses/recommends/supports them.

@Corben78 My recommendation for beginners is almost always Mint. Mint is Ubuntu without the bugs and with more polish. Really hard to mess up with that one if you stick to installing stuff from the Mint app store.

@boilingsteam I alternate betwern Mint or Manjaro for beginners. Manjaro has been dirt easy in my experience and it reduces the chance of the users needing PPAs for updated kernel or Mesa (more for gamers).
