Hi #fosstodon I need your help. Which of these services would you run from home? I have 10 MBit upload at home. And currently these services run on a rented VPS. In case of Nextcloud, I'll host at home. I really don't know how much my homenetwork can handle. I'd use namecheap dyndns with fritzbox! - thanks

@tinfoilhat Can't see a reason why you can't run them all from home. 10Mb upload is perfectly fine for a very low number of users, unless your nextcloud is used heavily.I could give more advice if you can tell me how many people would use it, what they'd be use for, and why you'd want to move from a VPS to a home server.

@tinfoilhat Oh that's a Mebibit. The unit of measurement invented purely to confuse me.That's substantially worse than I thought. Loading multiple images at once won't be a be a great user experience.Maybe you could get away with the twitter clones, but I wouldn't recommend much else. I would only want to host a basic web server for plain HTML pages myself on that upload speed. If at all possible, maybe stick with the VPS.

@tinfoilhat Oh my mistake. Memory like a goldfish. I forgot I asked the question. In that case, that's a quite awful upload speed for a VPS. Are you paying for it?10Mbit for your home is fine and I'll revert you to my original answer.

@tinfoilhat Yes, slurm is a nice overview of all traffic, and nethogs can tell you traffic on a per application basis.

@tinfoilhat Try to keep services with private content inside your network if possible. Nextcloud, gitweb, weechat and the wiki. For IRC a bouncer maybe is better suited for your use case instead of a client open 24/7 on a terminal multiplexer... but it's a matter of tastes i guess...Invidious, searx and nitter are basically proxied frontends, keeping them on a remote machine is better.Peertube is a badwidth sinkhole, especially if it is publicly open.
