       In fourth century B.C. Roman citizens almost caused a riot that prompted a special session of the senate simply because they saw whipping marks on the back of a fellow Roman citizen. (Valerius Maximus 6.1.9) Not even Japan has such levels of social cohesion today, much less any place in the West. Or contrast the Roman spirit with those who think it a good deed to exploit and trample their fellow people.

       @newt a fellow free Roman carrying marks of slavery was indeed an outrage in the Roman republic. I'm not sure there is anything comparable today.
