ok so as many of you know we have some energy related issues going on in the world, mainly shit that has something to do with how we produce it, how much we produce and how many wastes we generate to obtain that energy.at the moment we have fossils to kinda fulfil our energy needs (at least for the moment)but they come with the downside of generating some nasty amounts of pollution and no i don't mean only to "muh carbon emmisions".now some (specially leftoids who don't know shit about the subject) think that the solution is only on the popular renewables being solar and wind, which let me tell you it's ABSOLUTELY IDIOTIC AND EVERYONE WHO THINK THESE TWO ARE LIKE THE ENERGY MESSIAH ARE DELUSSIONAL AT BEST AND MENTALLY RETARDED AT WORST, both of these have a horrible flaw being that they only produce energy under certain metheorological conditions (which is something out of our control) however the problems don't stop there, there's also the issue that they are not enough energetically dense to even compete with fossils. now i want to focus on photovoltaic pannels and why i need to talk about this.almost all my life i've been constantly hearing about how photovoltaic pannels are some sort of godsent gift that will solve the incoming energy crisis and im not gonna lie there was a time where i believed this too but as time passed and i studied my current mayor i started to notice that the data just didn't add up which led me to think that "well maybe the solution in short to mid term is to rely on nuclears and in the future use greens once they develop enough" but now im not even sure about that, i already knew that a lot of parts from solar pannels are nigh impossible to recycle but i never stopped to think about THE ABSOLUTE QUANTITY OF TOXIC SHIT THAT GOES AND BECOMES WASTE IS HORRIBLE and it all makes sense, to produce at least a rentable amount of energy with photovoltaic you require a shit ton of space due to the efficiency and energy produced by one single panel being so small.now take this last point and the fact that basically everything from a pannel goes to the trash (cept for the aluminum and copper) and you have a recipe for disaster, it's even worse considering that AT MOST a photovoltaic pannel last from 20 to 30 yearsnow in contrast nuclear powerplants tend to last from 50 to 60 years and are probabbly the most densely energetic source at our disposalwhen it comes to space nuclear is also a lot better, consider that a somewhat decent solar farm may give you enough electricity for a few hundreds of houses while ONE nuclear powerplant can give you energy for thousands and even thousands of houses and industrial facilities.however these comparisons are nothing compared to one of the most important aspects of this whole discussion which is the ratio of energy per waste produced which is honestly astounding that almost no one talks about this.nulear being such an energitally dense source means less wastes producced while solar being low energetically dense means more waste per watt produced which you can give yourself an idea of how bad it is with the graphic bellow plus some other interesting stuffthese were take from these sites:https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2211467X19301245https://environmentalprogress.org/big-news/2017/6/21/are-we-headed-for-a-solar-waste-crisisthe data may vary a bit here or there but it does make sense at least with what i know and it just gives me more reasons to continue pushing for nuclears instead of the whimsical "clean energies"

@rlier23 I know that Wind turbines are also pretty much impossible to recycle, which also makes them fucking awful green energy wise.

@rlier23 I don't think that solar and wind power are bad, they are pretty good for home-usage but for big power plants nuclear and maybe rivers are the best ones

@rlier23 @ninja8tyu yo, now that you talked about your field may I ask what do you think about Nuclear Fusion and the french fusion reactor that Yuuros are putting together?

@Gigi @ninja8tyu fusion is insanely good, not only is it more energy efficient, but as far as i know since youre fusing nuclei it means you'll get more stable wastes which if im not wrong also means less radiation.haven't gotten into a lot of the specifics but im amazed by the fact they can create enough pressure and heat to kick off such a process

@kumicota not quite, i mean yes if you know how to administrate your energy you can get a good milleage out of them, but last time i checked the inversion required for a house alone tends to be always on the "lose money" side, either because of enviromental issues, storage, extra required quipment etc.also if whatever your supplying energy to is also connected to the grid you'll have to do certain modifications so that it doesn't mess with the whole system

@rlier23 @ninja8tyu the issue with nuclear energy is that the way the current culture trends are going, there is going to be a demand to have diversity hires at nuclear plants and then we'll have Chernobyl 2: Electric Boogaloo XTREME

@SnekTheSneaky @ninja8tyu fair point, but it would have to be more on the planning/construction of the plant itself, luckily enough current reactors have enough emergency systems (some of which don't require computers) that unless you fuck up REAL REAL REAL BAD like worse than chernobyl the reactor wouldn't blow up and even if it blew up the chances of it leaving residues as horrible as the elephants footbut yeah don't let "muh diversity" get near nuclear :kekw:

@rlier23 @ninja8tyu my use of Chernobyl was rhetorical but you get what I mean. If you put girlboss blacc kween in charge of maintenence nuclear isn't really going to solve the energy issue. Not because nuclear isn't better in every way than the current set up (it is). But because the worst dregs of STEM will fail upwardsHusky_1636505817501_WL3GA81CV2.jpgHusky_1636505837237_UP2597NSYT.jpg

@rlier23 @ninja8tyu Im admitedly out of the loop on the subject but I remember reading about thorium as a better replacement for uranium in nuclear plants, is there any merit to that?

@hexagonalsheep93 @ninja8tyu @rlier23 LFTR ftw !!A reactor with fuel in liquid form can be engineered such that it is impossible for it to fail catastrophically. If the fuel heats up too much, for whatever reason, the salt plug at the bottom melts, and all the fuel drains out into a wide flat basin, which spreads out the fuel, thus halting all further nuclear reaction. These plants could also serve as their own disposal sites.
