I am watching WCW Nitro, Jan 8 1996. The main event tonight is Rick Flair and Arn Anderson vs Hulk Hogan and Macho Man Randy Savage. This is peak WCW, pre NWO storyline (there was a peak WCW within the NWO storyline as well, but that's a different kind of animal.) There was just an advertisement for Lawnmower Man 2 "God made him simple, science made him a god, now he wants revenge." I have ... I have no idea what that means?

Hogan/Savage is a great tag team. This is late Hulk-A-Mania, but it's peak Snap in to a Slim Jim Savage. Of course, Hogan and Savage were dirty faces, good guys that fought ugly. Flair and Anderson were just straight heels. I expect the entire match to turn in to an 8 person brawl with lots of chair shots.

@ajroach42 I have no idea why anyone thought Lawnmower Man was worthy of a sequel honestly.WCW was something else. A couple of noteworthy peaks surrounded by deep dark valleys. Even when it was bad it was perversely interesting to watch in the train wreck sense. I've had the opportunity to talk with Martha Hart and it was pretty eye opening to hear about what working in the WWF and WCW was like in the 1990s. I'm surprised it didn't mess up even more of the performers than it did.

Hogan pinned Flair without about five minutes to go, and then The Giant, Chris Benioit, the zodiac, and Jimmy Heart all showed up to beat the hell out of Hogan and Savage. More or less as I expected. It's real weird to see Lex Luger and Chris Benoit wrestling today, considering what came next for them. Kind of like watching Owen Hart perform, I guess.

It's also super weird when the Steiner Brothers and Buff Bagwell show up, because they live in and around the town I grew up in, and I went to church with Scott Steiner, and have eaten dinner with Buff Bagwell and a bunch of C list wrestlers who were working with the lcoal wrestling group I used to frequent.

The local wrestling group was super cool. It was run by Robert "rock and roll express" Gibson, and frequented by a bunch of former WCW royalty and minor personalities. After the events, my wife and I and my little brother would go hit up a local Italian joint for dinner, and nearly every time a big bunch of wrestlers would saunter in about a half hour after we did, and about half the time we'd all end up sharing the communal dining table.

So we'd rub elbows with a bunch of wrestlers, and sometimes we'd play trivia together. It happened often enough that they'd greet us when they saw us at the events, and it got to the point that they'd just sit with us when they got to the restaurant. It was neat! I got to know a bunch of minor TV wrestlers from the 90s and 00s, and was for a time on speaking terms with some of the bigger names too. All because we liked the same pizza joint.
