The United States Postal Service made a huge mistake issuing "forever" stamps. Change my mind.

@leyonhjelm Like those meme Big Mac tokens, they are objectively a more valuable currency than the United States dollar because they’re actually backed by something, in this case a service. I rest my case.

@leyonhjelm The American Legal system entertains Apple's idea that "“no reasonable consumer would believe” that content purchased through iTunes would be available on the platform indefinitely.Apple's precedent, if successful, will be used to update the dictionary definition of "forever" to "forever*".https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2021/04/apple-faces-class-action-lawsuit-over-its-definition-of-the-word-buy/

@leyonhjelm I'm about to start invoicing them for all the late fees I incur when they don't deliver our mail. I think our guy took the month of October off.

@NEETzsche I bought a pack of like 100 Forever stamps at Costco right before it went back up to 49 cents a few years ago. I paid something like 45 or 46 cents for what was at the time 47 cents worth of postage. I'm still using those up with the rate currently at 58 cents. Meanwhile, each extra ounce coil I bought was 15 cents per stamp at the time, and has 100 stamps. Those were purchased literally earlier this year right before the rate went up a nickel. They're worth 20 cents now, so I made $5 in postage per coil. I bought five in January and can use three of them to mail a first class letter for effectively 45 cents - same as I paid several years ago for first class stamps, and I'm still technically overpaying by two cents in pure stamps.I know not everyone is gaming the system like I am, but that rate increase from 55 cents to 58 cents will take forever to help them because nobody will be running down to the post office to get their extra three cent stamps to make up the difference. And with the value being constant, I will always get the service even if it goes up to five bucks.I predict that due to inflation they'll eventually be forced to "freeze" the value of a first-class forever stamp at about a buck worth of postage and go back to denominated stamps, or start requiring two to send a single letter.

@Tinyhouse4life Forever is now how long mail with those stamps may take to deliver, not the value of the stamp

@leyonhjelm but can they tax the unrealized gains on your forever stamps? Stay tuned to find out
