What about… an operating system that isn’t running all the time? It only spins up when it has to?

@vidak I think people may be more keen to this idea with computers that boot up and shut down fast. It's kind of crazy how much slower a modern computer turns on than some older computers. The Commodore 64 turned on like a light switch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moO2MaW_mPQEven the modern display took longer to "wake up" than the computer took to boot. Boot speed has been neglected for decades, it's kind of weird.

@robby you could do it with community servers that have household thin clients—probably with something like Plan 9’s distributed file system concept?

@vidak Probably! Actually, have you ever played around with “multi seat” mode with window managers? I was poking around in the sway manual, and I stumbled on it. I think it could be a really cool way to decrease the number of computers in a household :)

@robby @vidak I dream of having a single beefy computer that all family members have a seat at.
