i love reading those websites from the 90s where they have a 'letters page' where all the emails people sent in are "do you know where i can find this thing?" and the responses from the website owner are like "thanks for your e-mail! recently i've started using something called a search 'engine' to look for things like this"

it's actually quite extreme how, in the space of one generation, the go-to answer for "how do I do this? where do I find this? can you help me with this?" went from "ask someone you know who might ask someone they know" to "ask a machine"

much of ordinary life used to involve socializing that was ostensibly for things like this, but was really just an excuse to hang out and get to know people, ideally local to you. you'd be friends with your grocer or mechanic. now i bet most people just google "best mechanic"! these changes existed hundreds of years ago too, as society became more professionalized (e.g. differences between small rural vs dense cities and the variety of trades and professions), but tech has really accelerated it

@jk and now the machines only reply with pinterest and facebook marketplace so it's somehow back to "ask someone you know who might ask someone they know" but with less agency

@jk and it became the norm in software communities to ostracize those who would dare ask humans instead of machines. Sigh.
