@ademan @Moon @nik okay so being a little more topical and a little less pithy here - big issue with the NFT thing is precisely that they are basically ownership of links to things, usually on IPFS or 'the cloud'. It really only functions in a walled-garden environment. This is why the gaming applications are for now the most interesting and the 'fine art omg i own this jpg' stuff is retarded. When it means that you won or bought the Excalibur Ninja Sword that deals 1000dmg in World of Funkopops and it only functions in that context and you can buy and sell it, then the NFT gives it value.

@dew_the_dew @nik @Moon This is why the gaming applications are for now the most interestingAgreed, more or less. This can extend to the physical world too, though, but I’m not sure I want it to 😂 https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Smart_Propertythe ‘fine art omg i own this jpg’ stuff is retarded.I disagree here, I see this aspect as an extension of the concept of commissioning an art piece. People commission art all the time online, and the jpg is free, everywhere, and yet people still value the creation of the commission. NFTs can provide a (small) value add there, allowing the commissioner to trade it, and they can prove to someone else they have the token, mostly for epeen points. That is why I say NFT valuations are crazy, but they’re not worthless.

@ademan @Moon @dew_the_dew @nik no one gives a shit about the addresses. There's nothing about the photo itself that makes it unique to any copy/paste. A painting is unique because prints don't show the texture in 3D the way brush strokes on canvas do. You can't make another one of those and there are people who are really good at forging paintings but you can still tell. I guess in this comparison though, there's actually a lot of similarity between NFTs and the Art Gallery because it's all a money laundering op anyways

@agora_brewing @Moon @dew_the_dew @nik NFTs aren’t an address, or an image, they’re a certificate of ownership. I agree they’re way overvalued in the case of images, but that doesn’t make them worthless. They’re a certificate of ownership you can show others to prove your ownership, or trade to somebody else. I’d argue, generally, proving to somebody else your ownership over some random piece of art isn’t very valuable, but it’s not worthless.

@ademan @Moon @dew_the_dew @nik the cert is an address on some chain though right? and I would argue it IS worthless because being able to prove that I own something that can be copy/pasted a billion times is worthless. I've never had to prove that I own a meme, why would I want to? It's viral content, not a goddamn house. And anything in the real world that I would need to prove ownership for, using a blockchain for that is ridiculous. This is why money is the only use case for blockchain at all. Everything stays on the chain. Remember when they said McAfee had a deadman's switch on the blockchain and if he died, events would be set in motion? Someone still has to tell the chain that he died. You see what I'm getting at?

They can show off all of the art they’ve commissioned, or trade it away. I think that’s valuable, not millions of dollars valuable, but valuable.

@ademan @Moon @dew_the_dew @nik Ok I have an answer for that. The hypothetical relies on the idea that I would later be able to sell the certificate.A) Unless there is an NFT operation where you pay with an off-chain coin, and the only purpose of the chain is to log new NFT certs, fine. I personally, do not know of an NFT platform that does NOT rely on a monetary based blockchain. The economics of the Tx fees and mining do not make sense in a system where I only hold the cert as proof of purchase. Which leads to my next point...B) I don't know why anyone would buy an NFT cert. It cheapens the experience to have bought a cert that originally denoted who the original purchaser was. No one wants to own a cert after the fact. For example, I wouldn't want to own a certificate for proof that I participated in a charity event that I personally didn't participate in. That's weird man. So, if no one is buying NFTs in that sort of system, the use of blockchain and therefore NFT at all is silly. If you want to send out a cert of authenticity with your products, whether its indie art or club membership or whatever, be my guest. Again, I have to emphasize that the only way the NFT retains value is if the entirety of the transaction stays on chain but that can't happen because of the copy/paste problem and the artist retains original problem. You funded it? Cool. Why does this need to be denoted on a blockchain?

For example, I wouldn’t want to own a certificate for proof that I participated in a charity event that I personally didn’t participate in. That’s weird man.I agree there. I think the only real use of after-the-fact trading in this case is speculation and collecting, but that can benefit artists in the original commission price.

@agora_brewing @lain @Moon @dew_the_dew @nik This whole thread started from an assertion of worthlessness. I’m not trying to convince you to value NFTs, I understand entirely why you don’t value them, I’m just trying to explain why others do. (I don’t own, and will probably never own any myself, except maybe in the commission case, but I don’t generally commission art…)

@agora_brewing @Moon @ademan @dew_the_dew @lain @nik I think there may be a misunderstanding here. Urbit uses the Ethereum blockchain for it's identity verification system, though their goal is not to remain wedded to etheruem forever. @agora_brewing @nik @dew_the_dew @Moon @ademan the difference is that airspace has to be regulated to stop people from broadcasting over each other while using it (or at least, in a world where people aren't perfectly just it does), whereas with domain names you just need the system to give a name to one entity and one entity only. with the current DNS this happens (oversimplified) using a hierarchical network of authoritative resolvers: the 13 root zone servers each contain a zone file which contains the addresses of the authoritative resolvers below them, one set for each TLD. and the authoritative resolvers for each TLD contain zone files for each domain name under them, and so on until you get to the end of the domain.1/?

@Hyolobrika @nik @dew_the_dew @Moon @ademan @agora_brewing Oversimplification: Airwaves can be affected by other airwaves because it's physics. Domain names are not related to airwaves, only the electrical connections to the servers are, which is completely irrelevant. Domain names are simply a file, not airwaves, and cannot interfere with one another.

@agora_brewing @Moon @dew_the_dew @nikthe disadvantage of this is that ICANN, which runs the root zone servers, can do whatever they want with the zone file, including threaten to remove a TLD if the owners of that TLD refuse to comply with a request to remove a domain from their servers (is this right @ademan@thebag.social?)blockchain domains work differently. to resolve a blockchain domain such as i.e. thebagsocial.bit, your computer either has a copy of the blockchain and looks up the domain name directly, or asks a different computer to do it for them. these computers can be run by anyone, not just ICANN2/?

@Moon @agora_brewing @dew_the_dew @nik the government can strongarm people into playing by their rules on the airwaves, yes. but I don't know if they could strongarm nodes on a blockchain network into doing their bidding. nodes can be operated in any country that has access to the internet. so if one country is compromised, other countries can pick up the slack. it's just as likely as currency transfers on a blockchain being censored (which I recall has happened on bitcoin, due to one mining pool)I don't see why a government would need to do that though. If someone is hosting illegal or unflattering things then they would want to get to the source, the server hosting said things, and take that down. if they really wanted to put up a notice on that domain name, they would have to force the owner to give up their private key, like they presumably do when seizing bitcoin3/4
