Encrypted chat app Wickr is funded by the CIA. We'd recommend Signal or Threema instead! https://www.vice.com/en/article/y3dawk/wickr-cia-funding-inqtelTo fully trust an app, it's necessary that all client code is published as open source: https://tutanota.com/blog/posts/open-source-email/

@Tutanota Is there a reason you'd suggest Signal over Matrix or XMPP ?

@PublicNuisance @Tutanota I also want to know why not recommend Matrix or XMPP.

@blkpws@PublicNuisance @TutanotaSimplicity, ease of setting up for an ordinary non technical person, and a familiar interface springs to mind for Signal. That and the fact that I have friends and colleagues who have made the switch from other platforms.

@MurrayWindripper @blkpws @Tutanota All of your reasons are subjective and how much truth there is to them will vary from person to person. What is an objective fact is that signal requires you to give a phone number up which is a huge privacy issue and something neither Matrix or XMPP do.

@Tutanota I like how you strategically limited your statement to *client* code. Good PR move. Very slick.Tutanota server code open-source when tho?

@rysiek We might release a small server for self-hosting in the future. Our current system is too complex for that so there is no point in publishing it as open source atm.

@PublicNuisance @MurrayWindripper @blkpws @Tutanota Well, centralised services are much better at protecting metadata than federated ones.

@datenschutzratgeber @PublicNuisance @MurrayWindripper @Tutanota "As a result, Signal said that they would start investigating new methods/approaches.[172][173] Signal switched from AWS back to Google in April 2019" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signal_(software) Still using those services controlled by governments and easy to spy. 😕

@blkpws @PublicNuisance @MurrayWindripper @Tutanota Sure, it's bad that Signal funds Amazon and/or Google services. However, they don't have access to any user data (other than user agents a.k.a. the app version) since Signal encrypts it.

@datenschutzratgeber @PublicNuisance @MurrayWindripper @Tutanota Seems like now Signal is planning to make some closed source code on their servers.

@datenschutzratgeber @PublicNuisance @MurrayWindripper @Tutanota "To prevent spam on Signal, we need to build this spam-battling logic in a separate server component. The interfaces to this code will be public, but the implementation will not be shared." https://signal.org/blog/keeping-spam-off-signal
