If you want to get away from centralized Messengers like Whatsapp, Signal etc, consider Delta Chat.- It uses your existing email accounts.- End to end encryption is automatic.- Email is federated.- No collision with your normal email app.Just enter your email account into the app, get some friend(s) to do the same, and chat...Try it:https://f-droid.org/de/packages/com.b44t.messengerhttps://delta.chat/

@rudolf Thanks for this, had never heard of this project and it seems like the best way of providing an easy-to-pick-up (everyone has an email address) alternative that'll be familiar (WhatsApp design) to those less tech-inclined around me. Going to have a play with this and see how it works.

@rudolf I just tried DeltaChat for the first time by myself and it's super simple! Will keep it and recommend it to people that don't want to create new accounts somewhere. Thanks! 🙂

@rudolf No, the main reason being that it's almost impossible to register an anonymous mailbox nowadays.

@rudolf Are you sure? Yandex bent over to Kremlin before Putin's "reelection" almost two years ago and locked even existing mailboxes that were accessed through Tor. They started to blackmail users to provide real personal data like name and mobile phone number.

@rudolf Having one email for everything is wrong, you lose access to it for whatever reason and any account that's tied to it is lost as well.

@thorn Delta does multi account just like K9 or Thunderbird. So you can chat over your main account where metadata is uncritical, and use another for mote critical stuff. For hot stuff use Briar or Jami!Yandex nags me for a phone number, but they dont have it.gmx.de works fine with Delta.

@rudolf With gmx.de I don't even see an obvious way to switch to interface to English. And the signup form seems to be asking for personal data like name and phone number as well. Free email used to be different twenty years ago. Nowadays it looks like honeypots.

@stuts @rudolf in many ways, it's kind of weird that Delta chat, or at least email based messaging, wasn't the first private messaging technology.

@mwt @stuts Back then email took to long over slow lines. IRC was much faster. Today, email is fast enough.

@rudolf @thorn it would be nice if providers that didn't support IMAP like tutanota and protonmail (I know there's a bridge) could support deltachat too.

@mwt @rudolf That's just another problem with email. Protonmail isn't anonymity friendly either, good luck creating an anonymous mailbox over Tor there.

@thorn @rudolf there are niche communities where you can make an email account without being tracked (eg. sdf.org). I think that a mainstream free provider can't really do it as they need to prevent abuse of their free plans.

@rudolf Yandex became Tor hostile two years ago. Putin is still in charge. Do you want me to believe Yandex became Tor friendly lately?

@rudolf @stuts that's interesting. I think IRC doesn't really do what we expect from private messaging though. Without a bouncer, you need a persistent connection to receive private messages. The server doesn't save them for you to read later.

@mwt @stuts I am talking about a long time ago. First there was email, then IRC, then Jabber/XMPP, then much later Whatsapp. Whatsapp is so far away from email that nobody considered using the user interface like Whatsapp on top of the "stone age" email transport protocol. Until DeltaChat did.

@thorn What has using Yandex with DeltaChat have to do with Tor? You got things completelx mixed up.And guess why I use Yandex if I write against US? Any idea? Why don't I use a US service that is friendly to US authorities ? And helps them find me.

@rudolf I will summarize again:- DeltaChat relies on email- registering an anonymous mailbox (over Tor) is almost impossible, or requires too much time to find a low profile mail service that allows it- hence DeltaChat is inconvenient for meThat's all.

@b847c1960 It isn't meant as a primary mail client. I use it side by side with K9. Same account, no clashes.Of course it made sense to include some basic mail client functions. It would have been stupid if Delta could not also send a simple mail.

@rudolf delta-chat is a fascinating thing. It also led to the idea a friend is pursing of creating decentralized feed driven social media over email...
