"Your computer isn't that old, you just need a better operating system."You know, the more I keep using Linux, the truer this saying gets. It's amazing how far you can take even these 2000s machines with just the right mix of software.

@kzimmermann I have a decommissioned Dell from some business that just has a dual-core CPU and a couple of gigs of RAM.It's set up with Proxmox (for some flexibility and so that I can remotely access the GUI, it's otherwise headless), and it runs data capture for my radio telescope. (Or did when I had a dongle for it, but I'll have another one waiting for me when I get home).Very low power, very old, but can do cool stuff.

@trekkie1701c amazing usage! In my case I'm typing this toot from a 2007-era inspiron with similar specs running Puppy Linux off a USB stick.Does it run well? Well, it can do everything that a modern computer does only at a fraction of the price and resources. And the best part: people sometimes will even give it away to you for free because they think it's useless!

@kzimmermann man, all of my computers are from 2000-2010s and I still have no pressing need to upgrade.Drop in a dirt cheap ssd, max out on cheap DDR3, and put linux on it, and these machines run better than a lot of new machines, for a very low number of dollars.Windows, though, is so horrifically bloated that it's nearly unusable. I have to spend hours ripping out Microsoft garbage every time i do an install. SO glad my job is no longer tied to windows

@kzimmermann This is actually how I got into FOSS in the first place. My family was fairly poor and our computer - in the early 2000s - was an AST system with CGA graphics and an 80286 in it. My first real experience with a GUI system at home was when a friend gave me an otherwise junker PC that I can't remember the specs to, but it ran Mandrake Linux and it was amazing. I'd been hooked ever since.

@rolenthedeep nice! Yeah, DDR3 is so cheap and readily available that I can't imagine using something else today. Coupled with a smart OS and bam: lean, mean machine!Glad to hear about your no-longer-dependency on Windows for your job! Did you have to "battle" against your employer to reach it? Or was that simply the default for the position? I really want to get to that position for my job one day :P

@trekkie1701c wow, amazing story! Who can imagine creating life out of a - literally - discarded computer that has no apparent use? Such is the power of Free Software, a real underdog's tale!

@kzimmermann no, I left the world of professional programming lolI had been working for a game studio on a title in C#, we were tied to visual studio. Now I just program for my hobbies and side work. Most of what I want to do includes cross platform support, so might as well just live in Linux.Linux now is worlds apart from what it was a few years ago. I really don't miss windows at all.
