@sjw @unused_ibuprofen @p it'll take two forevers to rebuild at that drive size + a significant performance penalty.that being said, i run 4x4TB in RAID5 for my main bulk storage volume and a couple more 6x2TB arrays in my SAN. speed is completely irrelevant to me there.

@sjw @unused_ibuprofen > Why RAID5 should be avoided at all costs. - ASK Database Management:Well, that sounds like a measured article.> Weebly siteA rando DBA has a blog.> RAID originally stood for Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disk and was an idea proposed in the early days of computing when storage was relatively expensive.> Unfortunately databases do not work that way.I get the feeling he's an Oracle guy and hasn't worked with Postgres much.> Like a million words words forever a fuckton of wordsI'm going to just skim.> Note that the recently popular IDE/ATA/SATA drivesIs this actually 15 years out of date?> Speaking of SSD drives, their failure rates, including bit loss, are nearly identical to that of spindle drives. What a strange thing to say.> But, like the replacement sectors on magnetic drives eventually the cells will reach their end-of-life and begin to fail and return garbage. This is not the failure mode of SSDs.I do not wish to read any more of this. @sjw @unused_ibuprofen that's oddly skinny for a fiber cable, must be GPON with a single fiber.and they just said "fuck it" and gave up on conduit before reaching the box, very sad!nobody's gonna do anything about the loose coax and twisted pair just chilling there, ISPs just don't give a shit

@1iceloops123 @sjw @unused_ibuprofen it's easy if you've got an attic or unfinished basement to reach the tops or bottoms of walls with.get a nice little wall rack or cabinet to stick in your basement or utility room, then go from a keystone jack in each room/area you want network access to a patch panel in the rack. and get a proper wireless AP (or two) positioned around the middle of the house.

@p @unused_ibuprofen Yeah, I saw a bunch of that shit which is why I CCed you.Databases are one thing. I'd either use RAID10, RAID100 or ZFS. However if I'm huge scale I'm probably gonna be using ZFS. For my scale RAID5 makes sense. It gives arguably the same amount of redundancy as RAID10. Except in my case I'll get a 2x read boost (same as RAID10), write speed of a single drive (same as RAID10), same capacity, except I'll have a spare drive on hand in case of failure. RAID6 only really makes sense if you have a proper RAID card with onboard RAM and a backup battery so you don't suffer from sizeable write penalties since it can calculate all the parity data in RAM before writing it to the disks.Might be worth getting a RAM card just to offload the parity calculations. Not sure if it'll be worth it tho.I got a cheap 500 GB NVME drive I'll be using as a read cache which will likely take a lot of read load off of the drives.

@skylar @unused_ibuprofen that's how they're doing all of them. Not sure how many fibres are in a single cable. It's serving 4 units so I'm assuming at least 8 or more likely 10.

@sjw @unused_ibuprofen could be 1 fiber for all 4 and more if it's GPON, just passive splitters and laser transceivers at different wavelengths sharing the same fiberusually there's at least 6 or 12 fibers in a cable and it goes all the way up to 288, you'll only ever see less in short segments meant to be patch cables.
