@nobullyplz @Bro-Drillard it’s retarded that we haven’t picked a few chips every 5-10 years to just freeze development on and continue to make in perpetuity, with no changes except to fix hardware bugs as they’re foundand I mean no changes, no changes to power requirements or anything; the goal should be total design stability, not just a stable code base

@nobullyplz @Bro-Drillard @deprecated and doesn't have foundries anymore, but Intel and microchip have foundry's in the US. The USA actually has a pretty large percentage of semiconductor fabs with Intel fabbing 35% of semiconductors by itself. Some of the upscale universities and research labs in the US can also do semiconductor manufacturing for prototypes in house. They aren't nm scale but um isn't out of reach. My understanding is that different labs are tooled for different types of chips. But if we don't have access to mems for a couple of years who fucking cares as long as we can have actual processors.

@deprecated @nobullyplz @Bro-Drillard This is literally why Zilog and WDC make so much money, and the same goes with the guys making the PIC, ATMega, MCS-51/i8051 clones, and similar chips. It's an old and slow design but it's also stable, in production for ages, and will be in production until the heat death of the universe.Unlike NXP who canned the 6800/6809, 68k family, and more.
