FTC: ISP's can be "at least as privacy intrusive as large advertisers". Collecting data on everything from #IoT, habits, mobile #apps, website url's, dns, catalogue, even sell your data (depending on location). #Privacy #FTC #Facebook #Datacollectionhttps://www.protocol.com/policy/isp-ftc-data

Some measures you can take to protect yourself from a nosy ISP: #Privacy#1: #Encryption (apps, messaging, #https sites)#2: Use #Tor+#onions or proxy in combination w/#E2EE (Encryption) [hidden services (tutorial on my channel)]#3: Setup your own Separate #router (ie: singleboard computer/#SBC) to prevent sharing certain #IoT/PC/phone metadata with ISP router [may become sold as identifiers]#5: Encrypt DNS services: even open DNS services can be proxied by ISP's for harvest (check!)

@castrillo You could try changing your DNS (in browser preferences or otherwise) to an *OpenDNS. Don't set encrypted DNS yet, this is for test.ISP's (my own included) proxy DNS that is not encrypted. The only way to see if your ISP is actively doing it (could happen later) is if you have a clear dns such as opendns set, and then use www.dnsleaktest.comThis w/report back the DNS settings being used- and if it isn't the newly set openDNS, you are being proxied for collection/possible censor

@castrillo I thought, it is worth looking. I was surprised to find my ISP proxying my DNS and found out they had a deal with advertising co.Encrypted DNS requests w/prevent this proxying (w/enables censorship as well as mass spying). You may already know this, but worth a look www.dnsleaktest.com after setting a clear dns to test honesty of ISP.

@castrillo They don't have the ability to proxy encrypted DNS because of the encryption. Still there are ways to find the website domains leaked in things such as cert leakage, nonetheless Tor solves it when used. š ISP's are the biggest spies of all especially after Trump allowed ISP's to start "selling customer data without explicit consent" in 2017.

@castrillo And leakage of domain in other protocols isn't really a big concern IMHO as they tend to use pure dns for most mass surveillance/censorship. not worth the packet inspection unless someone is targeted for it.

Other coverage (I like the Register): American ISP's slammed for "spying on their own customers". Report notes collection contents of email, television, browsing, search, connected devices, location, race/ethnicity. #News #FTC #FCC #ISP #Internet #Privacy #Advertising #USA #DataCollectionhttps://www.theregister.com/2021/10/22/ftc_isp_privacy
