On twitter it genuinely can be used to suppress free speech because of mass block lists and block algorithms which enable groups of users to shut off other people solely on the basis of whose (third party) tweets theyâve liked. But on here, blocking someone is equivalent to simply not listening.I suppose using âblock and reportâ could be construed as an attack on free speech because youâre trying to get someone taken off the platform.But a right to free speech doesnât give you a right to be listened to. Anyone can block at an individual level (without using the report button) for any reason. I use it (relatively sparingly) for people where I think âYou know what, lifeâs too short. This person is boring me now.â My doing this doesnât infringe their freedom of speech. It doesnât stop them posting on the site. It doesnât prevent other people from reading their posts. It just makes my life a bit less irritating.Itâs a bit like my choosing not to buy the Independent because I donât like their relentlessly pro-trans editorial line. It doesnât stop them publishing. Iâve sometimes seen it used in a mocking way when a woman is praising her wack husband and people will say sheâs claiming âNot my Nigel!â I think itâs used in a similar way to criticize people who say ânot all men are like that!â when women talk about men being violent.
