The fedilist.com crawler was down briefly last night because I was doing some embarrassing things to databases, so I looked at it when it came back up and saw stardew.city.NEETzsche was talking about actual community-focused instances (i.e., supplementing an existing community with a fedi server rather than standing up a server and trying to recruit a community), specifically for things like online games, but also for lots of other things. So I recognized the name from the game "Stardew Valley", and clicked. The crawler grabs instance descriptions so that when people search for instances, the domain, title, description, etc., happen, and the description said, basically, that it was named after Stardew Valley but was a general-purpose instance. Ah, well.The description also had the "This instance uses Mutant Standard emoji" boilerplate line, so my first thought was "Oh, they probably block everyone." 661 domains, as it turns out, even domains that aren't ActivityPub instances and that won't ever federate. They block twitter.com. (...in case Twitter starts federating?) They block xkcd.com, which is definitely not even fedi-related, it's just a mediocre webcomic that people keep recycling jokes from (if you haven't heard of it, think "Family Guy but nerdier and exactly as terrible"). They block fedilist.com, for some reason.So it's usually not noteworthy, a lot of the censorship-happy instances do this kind of thing, and that's a closed-registration instance with 30 people on it, that's fine, there's a small group of people that have an instance together, that's totally fine! They have a club, they censor somewhat heavily, but if it's 30 people, it's not that bad. But the number of instances and non-instances was huge!I wondered how many were actually up. You can probably do it with just a regular pipeline and standard tools, but I just parsed the HTML and pulled out the domains and then did a massive "where hostname in (that_bigass_list)". It turns out that 60 of those 661 instances don't exist and never did, and of the 601 remaining, 219 represent live instances. (When this thing goes live and all the data's public, maybe an endpoint that gives status changes for a given set of instances would be useful, like it'd let you see which of your peers are down or, for people like this, which parts of the blocklist they could trim.)So that got me wondering, I summed the user count from the instances that are alive but blocked by this instance, and of the 4,397,323 current total number of accounts on fedi, they are blocking 2,229,098 total. 50.7% of fedi is blocked from there!Nothing super relevant, just I saw an astonishing number and then mashed it together with some data and got another astonishing number, and gawked for a moment at how much of fedi they've blocked.

@p This got me thinking of something slightly off-topic. Would a completely non-federating instance be a good way to nigger-rig a simple message board for only a small group or community? It would lack the features of other forum software, but, in today's mobile-obsessed world, you could use an app like Husky to access it. (Pleroma might also me more light-weight than other software?)

So many instances block each other and it does get rather annoying, usually with bullshit twitter-tier reasons. Why is the FOSS community want to strive for "no-censorship" shit and hate on twitter but then proceed to block every instance they don't like? Sometimes they even find reasons to dislike 'em. I think it should be up the users to block instances with nazis/gab users, etc. and that instance blocking should only be done with spam or straight up CP instances. Instead, I bet it would be cleaner to block users FROM showing up in instances too, not block a whole community of people.

Gab is a fork of Mastodon, I don't think anyone's forked their botched backend. Soapbox is just a frontend, he ported it to Pleroma afterwards, he's been hacking on Pleroma a lot recently.

Microblogs are not a forums. In fact, I know someone who does this, and I see no reason not to. The federation logic can be completely disabled with a switch, and everything can be made to be 100% private, plus I trust pleroma to be more secure than a forum software (not all of course, just most)

It works as a pretty good reader as a result: just a full-screen PDF, and I mapped one of the face buttons to the spacebar so I can turn the page with the same hand I'm using to hold the device.
