@troonigger "race realist" can't even give tell us something like "you have to be about 56% or 95% genetically similar in some way." There's people arguing whether irish people or italians are white and you expect people to take this as a serious categorization.

@autu886234It's hard to say where e.g. ultraviolet light starts on the em spectrum, and even when you define some frequency, you can't argue that just below it isn't still ultraviolet-ish.We may not have a nigrometer, but a broad-spectrum nigger-detector is not hard to build. That's hard science.

@autu886234 @troonigger I mean at that point you may as well throw out most zoological categorization, because variation and hybridization occurs there as well. The real world is messy, but fuzzy categorization is still better than undifferentiated chaos, especially if there are observable differences between different groups of people which are deeper than skin tone and facial structure.

@Binkle @troonigger definitely think we can use genetics to understand human history and better make medicines but from my current knowledge(not much) i don't think we can actually divide people into 3-7 racial categories. And there's not really much point to it.

@Binkle @autu886234 right, like if I needed an urgent organ transplant, i wouldn't want some right-on medic disregarding race when searching for a compatible donor. At the same time, when you consider there are people of all races who can contemplate the nuances of e.g. the riemann hypothesis, it's absurd to place too much emphasis of 'race'.

@troonigger @autu886234 race doesn't have a particular place in the application of merit-based assessments, however in the final tally of education, athleticism, and other notable traits, one shouldn't be surprised if genetic differences between groups skew the proportions away from being exactly equal to their representation in the population at large. It also has an important place when considering questions of sovereignty and self-representation (should groups which have radically differing interests be governing one another rather than being allowed their own countries with their own governments, etc)

@autu886234 @troonigger I would agree 3-7 is too low resolution to have much utility, but I disagree that the value of increasing the number of groups is overshadowed by the complexity added by doing so. There's a sweet spot at which the lens of race is useful which is more than 3-7 but less that of the level of the individual.
