I don't want this to be a political post. This is just a testament to the strength of the Fediverse. New instances can join, drop, or any combination of the two, and it doesn't impact the Fed at large. Being a distributed social network means that one node of that network can experience catastrophic failure and it will have no impact on the rest of the network.

@mike indeed. The possible GPL violation issue is concerning but this really is just like Gab coming to fedi. It was effectively dealt with and everyone has options technically and idealisticly. If your server collapses under load there are other ways to operate and deal with that. If you dont like your servers policy you can always move and take your data with you.

@bpepple @mattrose I'm not sure we can make any calls on anything like that yet. According to announcements it's not supposed to be live until November, and that's for "invited guests", and not for the general public until first quarter of next year. It's still very much a "beta" product. I'm still boggling they went with "truthsocial.com" instead of "truth.social". Seems like a missed opportunity. Maybe someone else had the domain and they didn't want to pay out to get it?

@geotechland I don't know. It's entirely possible, but we don't know why the instance failed when it did. The developers over there don't seem to have made their code changes available for review, and without further details it's going to be hard to figure out what issues can be fixed in Mastodon and what may be specific to their forked code.

@mikeI just looked it up, truth.social was registered in January 2019. com, .co, .net and a few others are taken as well. Seems to be a popular name. I find it quite ridiculous.Trying not to get into politics, but regardless, this rocky start is not surprising. It shouldn't shock anybody to say that everything they do is half-assed.
