I've gotta say that I feel like IUDs are overhyped. I'm sure they're awesome for a lot of people, but my experience with them is that they're just fucking painful as hell all the time. Insertion is the second most intense pain I've ever felt in my life, they could easily say "oops sorry I just shoved a knife into your uterus instead of the IUD, my bad" and I'd believe them. Once it's in place it's just like a little angry scorpion that cycles between stabbing me for hours at a time and taking pointy naps. This is my punishment for being a childless hussy I guess.

@JumboSkeleton I had a housemate when I was a grad student who collapsed haemorrhaging from a wrongly placed IUD. Later (after it had been removed, and our other housemate had done her standard mother hen thing of home made chicken soup đ ) she described it as âa slow, painful method of sterilization.âNeedless to say I never went near them. Condoms for me back when I needed them.Though in fairness, one of my friends had a rarely used (because more complex to place and get out) form of IUD which consisted of a string of copper beads (no hormones) physically attached to the wall of your uterus. She swore by it and said it was brilliant. (And, following its removal, five children later I think we can safely say it did not affect her fertility.)

@EmmyNoether I'm quite anxious about perforation and the other ways of IUDs failing/making a mess of someone. I had one placed a year ago that hurt constantly like this, and after getting an ultrasound the verdict was "it's positioned fine but you have a little inflammation that could be related to your pain." I just asked for it to be taken out so I could go back to the pill.I'm fat, though, so getting a refill of the pill always comes with the midwife trying to convince me to use something else. The last time I had to ask for a refill, the midwife convinced me to give an IUD another go, so now here I am again. It's not as painful as last time, but fuck this "your cramps might be a little worse" shit. This ain't a little worse.I've never heard of a copper IUD that's attached to the wall itself - I considered a normal copper IUD but am very not into the idea of heavier periods. Mine get very wacky and intense without some kind of hormonal assistance keeping things in check.

@JumboSkeleton It is so hard to find a decent form of contraception thatâs reliable, pleasant to use and doesnât have side effects. In fact, I think itâs impossible to find a contraceptive that ticks all those boxes. The pill sent me a bit loopy (really didnât get on with artificial hormones) and had the ironic effect of destroying my libido (I suspect thatâs why they have such a high success rate - you donât bloody want to shag when youâre taking them), the diaphragm was a faff to use, and condoms are a pain (and alter sensation for women as well as men, IMO).Best contraception was in the relationship where my partner had had the snip. Vasectomies are bloody brilliant!

@EmmyNoether @JumboSkeleton I used to use a diaphragm decades ago, with contraceptive jelly, and that worked well, even though it was a bit of inconvenience. I think doctors now don't want to prescribe simple barrier methods like diaphragms. I never wanted an IUD b/c I knew that it would be agonizing to mess with the uterus to have it put in and there wouldn't be any pain relief. I had severe menstrual cramps and endometriosis and my cycles were just a disaster of pain and disability, as well as other side effects that I didn't even realize were caused by endo at the time.
