They turned out to be so shit I ended up signing up to a private one where I live because it became apparent the NHS dentist was wasting time waiting for my tooth to get beyond the point at which they could do a root canal so they could justify the easier option of an extraction.

@Ladyfat @HebrideanHecate In fairness to NHS dentists (I had an excellent one as a grad student, who once did emergency root canal work on a bank holiday), a dentist friend talked me through the economics of root canal work. By the time you’ve paid the dental nurse, plus the amount of time the appointment takes, you’re going to make a loss (nice dentist when I was a student had rigged up a Heath Robinson contraption so he could organise the suction himself without recourse to a nurse).Mind you, the Taunton dentists were shit all round - painful, brutal, clumsy.

@HebrideanHecate @Ladyfat I’m of an age where I have mercury amalgam fillings courtesy of prehistoric dentistry (in fact most of my molars are more amalgam than tooth). Dentistry was so traumatic that between the ages of about 17 and 30 I just hid from the dentist entirely (in fact, I think it was the pain which led to the first root canal that drove me back there).The Taunton one sounds like the BDSM dentist Sue mentions - I think she was the reincarnation of an eastern European gymnastics coach.

Yikes!My last and sane dentist removed my mercury fillings and replaced them with porcelain, but I know what you mean about more filling than tooth! I had cavities until I left home, started supplementing with minerals and stopped using name-brand toothpaste. Now I just have to deal with those teeth that have huge fillings!

@EmmyNoether @HebrideanHecate @Ladyfat My mercury-free dentist told me that she doesn't do root canals, because they cannot sterilize the hole and the gutta-percha carries germs. Those germs can get into your bloodstream through your jaw, and cause septicemia and heart diseases. Preserving the outside of the tooth really doesn't help. She pulls the tooth and either does a bridge or a post implant with porcelain crown. Those take a lot of serious care for several weeks. She won't do them if the patient won't take care. She did two implants on me, next to each other, and they look and feel better than my own teeth. They cost twice as much as a regular crown, but I think they are worth it. I can bite down on it and they are solid, unlike the regular teeth where a Hg filling cracked because it weakened the structural integrity of the tooth when I bit down on crispy bacon.

The scoffers -- whom I suspect are part of the medical-industrial complex -- seem unable to comprehend what happens when iodine-deficient people are exposed to fluoride, chloride, and bromine. Iodine and the other three elements are halides. Your body is full of iodine receptors, with the thyroid being the most full, followed by the breasts and apparently the rest of the reproductive system, in men as well as women. When you are iodine-deficient -- Dr Brownstein has tested thousands of people in his practice in Michigan -- your iodine receptors take up the other halides, which are all toxins. And they are everywhere in our environment, from bromated flour to many pharmaceuticals to flame retardants to sodas made with bromated vegetable oil. When iodine was removed as a dough conditioner and replaced with bromine, the rates of breast cancer skyrocketed, along with diabetes. Fluoride is certainly a toxin at high doses, but as with anything it's a matter of amounts - I'm sure you already know what the claimed benefits are of fluoride. Building stronger tooth enamel in children, preventing cavities in all age groups, fluoride deficiency being linked to having more brittle bones, etc. Lowering one's risk of breast/ovarian/cervical cancer is certainly a great thing, but weak bones will degrade your quality of life just as easily as cancer will, the older you get. What are your thoughts?
