Asanuma was not a member of the communist party, but the socialist one. Many of these parties dreamed of being free from the US and it’s black marine rapists. This discussion, though it has gone in a slightly different direction, is about whether the assassination of Asanuma was based or not. This isn’t only for you, but also a part two to my earlier thoughts. and hoping to move away from the discussion that may have gone off the rails a bit. I hope any more sincere discussion about Asanuma can continue below.The JSP had already had many spats up to this point and had even split between the left and right divisions in past. They were united only by Asanuma and the hope that he would be the one to lead them to a shared goal of getting rid of the immediate oppressor. The point I’m trying to make is that this was the only party in Japan with any power that did not want the US to take over and by killing Asanuma, Japanese liberation was thwarted.At this point in 1960, Japan was full of schisms politically and each tiny group had little power and would not compromise on anything in exchange for influence despite wanting 99% of the same thing, just like the modern right wing. The LDP(or proto-LDP I forget if they were around at this point officially) became the dominant force by basically allowing the US to do whatever they wanted to Japan. I understand their position somewhat. Most of them were anti-communists and thought that America would be a better bet than China/USSR. You yourself wrote “there was no chance of nationalism taking root in that party”. We do not know if this would be true for the JSP, but for the LDP we know this to be true 100% from history. Their only opposition was the JSP. The JSP was able to capitalize on some of the momentum from the riots and were able to make some small adjustment to ANPO. I don’t remember if these changes were significant, but the point was that they drew blood. Yes they had maoists in the party that wanted to align with China, but their leader and the right faction were Imperialists.We can sit here, with grace of hindsight, and say that commies are gay and shouldn’t be trusted (true), but at that time, the Japanese nationalists didn’t. They saw their brothers and while they squabbled, they were blood and agreed it was the number one priority to shake off the US first and then decide what to do later.With the assassination of Asanuma, all this momentum was lost. It’s true that Japan being a slave of the communists would be worse than being one to the US, but in my mind, there are not the only choices. There is another path for Japan to be able to stand on it’s own two feet. This is worth fighting for and that is why Asanuma’s death was tragic. It was the only shot towards freedom.

@dharmadudebro I’m not so sure on that honestly. I know that he did meet with LMao which caused a lot of rightful concern. @nozaki something I neglected to consider until reading this recent post.The change in narrative thats couldve happened across all parties had the JSP had more time to compete and exist in opposition to the LDP.You see it constantly in western politics, one party’s ideology seeps into the competing parties as they try to take members from their opposition they adopt some of their opposition’s beliefs.A Japan where the JSP had longer to exist may have seen many of the JSPs ideologies becomes more accepted even by the LDP.
