Why would an individual choose a 'paid' hosting plan on Matrix as opposed to signing up for a 'free' account at :matrix.org?Is it considered much safer? Love the idea of supporting the cause, just don't quite understand what the difference might actually be.https://element.io/matrix-services/ems-pricing#element #matrix #matrix.org

@cobraMost of those public homeservers I'm finding look suspect. It'd be interesting to use my personal domain with Matrix, but I'm just not sure its worth the investment.

@cobra The last versions of synapse it not that resource heavy. But yes, generally - synapse uses the RAM as cache.Mozilla has their own Matrix-server, and so does KDE.But using EMS, you support the effort financally and you get a isolated instance maintained by people that really understand matrix and synapse.I personally host my own. Currently dedicating two cores and 3 GB RAM, but I can probably go down to one CPU core, since the usage is very very low@lazarwolfe

@lazarwolfe one difference is that you can use your own domain to do that. But a different one which is probably more important is that you can add bridges to your own server which you can't as freely on the public ones.
