OK, very noob question here: I got a new toy, an old laptop, that my family was throwing away, and I decided I would tinker with it a bit. It is incredibly slow, which I am currently diagnosing (it's trying to run windows 10...). But, I wanted to give some different distros within a VM a try. Will that slowness carry over to the VM?

@pyre35 You probably have too little RAM, and then a VM will be even worse. Better try and run the distributions native.

@pyre35 A VM is something like a computer inside another one. So it shares many components from the physical host. In other words, if you create a VM with 8GB of ram and your physical machine is 10GB, your physical machine will be slow for sure. You can create all the VM you want but you always have to check the requeriments of your VM and the hardware capacity you have.

@pyre35 @rudolf That's plenty of memory. I ran two virtual machines (servers) on a Gentoo host with 2GB of RAM. :)Throw out Microsoft Windows and install a Linux based operating system on it, and you'll be fine. :)

@pyre35 Check what kind of drive is in that old laptopIt's probably one of those older 5400 rpm HDDsreplace it with any $30 SSD if that's the case and it'll probably be a lot faster, a SSD makes a really big difference compared to a standard laptop HDD. If it's already got a SSD then perhaps it's just too old, hard to know without any machine specifications at all. Also, it'll probably be faster if you disinfect the Windows infestation using Debian, or Manjaro, or perhaps Arch or Gentoo.

@hund @pyre35 Wimdow and a VM on Windows easily gooble up half of that RAM. To see how a distro performs, it is better to test it native.

@rudolf @pyre35 Running Windows on anything is slow and generally a bad idea. :)

@pyre35 @rudolf I just repulsed an old Dell with 4GB ram as well. Slowest part is the hard drive. Seems to work fine with Linux Mint.#linuxmint

@katie @pyre35 Came here to say this. Cheap laptop drives are terrifically slow. SSD will make a big difference.

@pyre35Install it directly on the computer - if you want to go back to windows just install it again. You probably want to clean the computer anyway
