@dushman @sapphire @soft @dwaltiz There is at least one disadvantage to having user replaceable batteries, which is water resistance. It wouldn't be possible since the battery would be outside of the seal. Breaking the seal also removes the water resistance feature of the phone, because it's highly unlikely that you'll be able to verify that any seal you replace it with will work.

@dushman @sapphire @soft @dwaltiz Other than high security devices. Most phones have some sort of water resistance, even mid-range ones. Lithium-ion batteries last around 1 year before they begin to degrade, and you can expect 2-4 years of total usage. I don't think a replaceable battery is an issue unless you were willing to swap it for a charged one you were carrying around with it when it depleted.

@sapphire @soft @dushman Do you have sources for Pixel 2 onwards having issues? Also, what exactly is "cucked" about Android? AOSP is borderline Google free, and there are ways (including custom OSes) to remove the small amount which remains.I'm a cybersecurity researcher with a high threat model, and I wouldn't use anything other than GrapheneOS (security and privacy hardened AOSP). GrapheneOS is the reason I use only Pixel phones.

@inference @soft @dushman Coming from a background of early Android development and testing, the OS is just not what it was. Its iOS with more holes and less features, unless I want to get into the rapidly dying modding community. As a cybersecurity researcher, though, you should know the inherent, unavoidable security risks of mobile in general and realize you're fighting a losing battle when no matter what precautions you take, the device still transmits over the same shit security mobile network no matter what you do.I'll keep my current methodology of "use iPhone, act like normie, don't do anything naughty on my phone" especially since work keeps buying them for me so the only argument that matters doesn't in my case

@sapphire @soft @dushman I have many points to refute about this, so let's get to it.1. Android was extremely insecure until 2014, which is when Daniel Micay (GrapheneOS founder) began the Android hardening process. A lot of the security work in AOSP has been upstreamed from GrapheneOS, and continues to be.2. GrapheneOS runs on Pixels only for a reason; Pixel hardware is almost entire open source, as well as being one of the only phones to allow custom Verified Boot keys along with the unlocked bootloader, which allows relocking the bootloader to protect against evil maid attacks, and boot chain to OS corruption. If VB cannot self-heal, it throws a security exception and halts boot.3. There is absolutely no Google or other spyware in GrapheneOS, and attempts to install Google Play services will cause them to run as unprivileged apps, instead of invasive SELinux weakening MAC policies.4. LineageOS, CalyxOS, /e/ etc are all lazy ways to solve the security and privacy problem of Android. They pile on features on top of AOSP, which does nothing for the user. GrapheneOS embeds the security and privacy functionality into the OS codebase, not as add-ons.5. GrapheneOS sandboxes the baseband and other radios via IOMMU, which leaves everything encrypted on device and anything going through those radios have been authorised by the OS and cannot be decrypted by the closed source firmware on the baseband. You really need to read https://grapheneos.org/features and the rest of the site. There's even a tamper/intrusion attestation app which uses the Hardware Security Module and custom VB keys to send alerts to email. You can also log out of user profiles to flush encryption keys from memory, and there's an option to automatically reboot the phone after a set time of no logging in, to purge encryption keys. What I mentioned is likely not even 5-10% of what GrapheneOS adds to AOSP.

@sapphire @inference @dushman @dwaltiz @soft it's really nice having a spare battery to swap rather than having to charge from <20%

@Brutus @soft @dushman @inference @dwaltiz 1. proper prior planning prevents piss poor performance, charge from higher. 2. powering down to swap batteries is dumb when there are far better alternatives

@Brutus @soft @dushman @inference @dwaltiz yet you burn through it so much that you need multiple batteries? What $100 piece of chinesium garbage do you have?Serious question, unless you're glaring at it like an OCD patient any phone on the market worth buying will last at least a full day + of use

@Brutus @sapphire @soft @dushman @dwaltiz Quick charging makes this redundant, and who actually carries pre-charged batteries around? I haven't known one person in my life do that, even when batteries were removable.

@Brutus @sapphire @soft @dushman @dwaltiz So, the military are OCD patients? Doctors are OCD patients? Construction workers are OCD patients?Your response is exactly what's wrong with humanity. Stop acting as of everything works your way.Newsflash: it doesn't.If you don't want to plan your moves to be at the top, that's on you.

@Brutus @sapphire @soft @dushman @dwaltiz You are forgetting one critical thing. If the batteries are no longer available, what do you do?Don't have that issue with a power bank and a USB cable.

@Brutus @sapphire @soft @dushman @dwaltiz And you'd rather pay an extortionate amount of money for official batteries, or risk it blowing up in your pocket if it's a cheap Chinese rip off, instead of just using a power bank?Definition of insanity.

@Brutus @soft @dushman @inference @dwaltiz if it wasn't "that big of a deal" you wouldn't have jumped into the thread to make it a big deal, just saying. No need to get upset just because you're demonstrably wrong.
